Hi,
I really need help because trying to have my music from my DS920+ (DSM 7.2.1-690587 Update 4) into Plex is driving me completely crazy!!!
Here’s what i have:
I have many mp3 and flac files
My folder structure is “music > Discographies > Artist/Band > Album > Tracks” Other example is “music > 90’s-00’s > Artist/Band > tracks”, etc etc etc
I already started this “process” 1 or 2 weeks ago! I know i have a lot of music (+/- 596GB) but it is taking an eternety.
Problems that i have been facing besides the time:
It is also “syncing” the snapshots from the music folder on my NAS (which i don’t think it’s necessary);
When i go to the Plexamp on my smartphone, it takes a long time to show all the “stats” in the library tab, and on “Tracks” it never shows nothing. I f i open “Tracks”, after severel seconds (minutes?), it says: “Unable to load data. This makes me sad”
If i go to the playlist “All music”, it shows a preview of the cover from 4 albums and the years, months, days to play everything. But, no tracks and after a while, the same message appears: “Unable to load data. This makes me sad”;
Also, i’m pretty sure it is not showing all “items” (example: on “Folders”)
Duplicate artists (example: Plex’s music library shows “2Pac” 3 times)
I can play a song, an album, and one or other radio created automatically with my music (when i’m lucky).
What i want, beside having all my music on Plex/Plexamp working perfectly, is for Plex to not change the metadata from several albums and separate tracks that i manually add.
I followed all the instructions and gave all the permissions.
Regarding videos and movies (HD, FullHD, 4K), i never had any problems, even with a folder structure identical to the one from my music.
Which folder(s) have you added to your music library on your server? Edit your music library and show a screenshot of the “Add folders” tab, something like the following:
What you should have added are both your “Discographies” and “90’s-00’s” folders given your examples, not your “music” folder. That is, you should be adding the folder(s) immediately above your artists folders to your library, and nothing higher.
Also, if your music is more-or-less perfectly tagged, you can enable the “Prefer local metadata” advanced option in the library. This could help mitigate folder organization/naming issues.
The tutorials / support articles mention you should have separate folders for different media types… and not to have extra layers of directories when it comes to organizing files inside your library folder(s).
If you organize the artist folders in another set of parent/grouping folder, that makes those parent/grouping folders your adequate library folders (same as when people use alphabetical index folders…).
As for artists showing up multiple times… do you have your library configured to prefer embedded metadata? If so, verify there’s no (tiny) deviations in the spelling of the artist/album tags… sometimes this can be as simple as a leading/trailing/in-between whitespace.
You can either do that if it’s really important to keep music sorted by type, or you can put all your music in one library and eliminate the middle layer of folder names, e.g. “discographies.”
I was talking about tutorials related to the installation of Plex on a Synology NAS, that I saw on other websites.
Regarding your 2nd paragraph, I think you’re saying to do what BanzaiInstitute said on the next reply.
Plex was able to detect/play tracks with my folder structure but I’ll try it on a different way.
Honestly, I prefer to add the folders one by one, because the way my organisation of music is on my NAS and pc, is more important to me than what Plex “wants”.
So, honestly i only saw 2Pac because it was one of the 1st artists.
I already saw the tags from 2Pac and everything is fine. Probably was some kind of glitch.
And yes, I have that option turned on.
Plex was able to detect/play tracks with my folder structure but I’ll try giving the path to each folder.
Honestly, having all mixed up it’s completely out of question, because the way my organisation of music is on my NAS and pc, is more important to me than what Plex “wants”.
(Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to “sound” aggressive or something like that. That’s not my intention)
Further regarding “Prefer local metadata,” see the first post in this how-to post:
While the entire post is informative, see the “Necessary Tags” section for information on how to best tag your music collection to work with Plex with that option enabled. It outlines which tags are absolutely needed and how they should be used.
I opened a port for Plex on my router to access my content when i’m not at home but it happens several times to go to Plex Web and see that it is not working. Then, it works agai, and so on.
Plex is showing a green remote access status indicator while it’s testing the status. It’s a fair guess that your remote access setup isn’t working at all.
Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?
I made the manual port forwarding, and i already had my server’s ip address static.
Now, unfortunately, i’m having a trully nightmare week. I’ll try first to add my music library by pointing to each individuall folder (like the folder structure i have), and then i’ll take a look at that.
I start from the scratch but this time i chose each folder (“50’s-80’”, “90’s-00’s”, “Albums”, “Discographies”, and so on) instead of choosing the Synology parent folder “music”.
It was faster to “sync” and now, when i go to the Library tab on Plexamp (Android), it now shows every info, including “Tracks” that wasn’t shown before.
The strange thing is that before doing this way, it wasn’t showing “Tracks” on the Library tab but on the Home > Recent Playlists > All Music i could see “7 years, x months”. Now it shows on “Tracks”, but on the All Music it only shows “2 months, 25 days” (and inside says 28217 tracks, while on Library > Tracks, it says 28202 )
