Jerky video @ original quality

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to play a video (details below) at original quality and it stutters on both Apple TV 4k and 3rd generation. Original quality playback works fine through the app on my Mac Powerbook, so this tells me that my Mac Mini server is sufficiently capable. I saw another thread that mentions 1080p 60fps max, but this is under that maximum. Any guidance is most appreciated.

Chris

Server Version#: 1.13.9.5456-ecd600442
Player Version#: 1.34.1 (10598)

It’s probably not the video but the audio causing the issue. Scroll down further on your Media info to show your audio info.

Thanks! As requested…

Verify that your server isn’t transcoding when serving the video to the Apple TV’s.

From the Web client can you check the Activity tool when trying to watch the said Title. This is found in the top tool bar, just hover your cursor over the Title playing image. Does it show Direct Play or Trans coding for Video or Audio.

Can you confirm that your connected to your apple TV via Ethernet or Wifi?

32%20PM

I have deselected the “direct stream” option from the server settings leaving only “direct play” but I only get playback as “direct stream.” All devices are 1000Mbps Ethernet connected.

Really appreciate the responses - thanks!!!

I noticed that the three files that have this issue all have the audio profile: pcm_s24le. No other files have that profile, and no other files are cranky on playback.

Well I would be looking at Handbrake

I re-ripped one last night w/o PCM and still have the same issue. Plenty of other mkvs play just fine, same bit rates, etc. Very strange!

In what concerns ATV3, if you are using PlexConnect latest version, AC3 should not be a problem if you choose that track to play instead of the PCM one. But bitrates >20K such as your example are above ATV3 specs so transcoding is advised, otherwise ATV3 may hang, and need a power recycle to recover.

Transcoding from 22K to 20K requires a very powerfull CPU. You may try to transcode to a lower bitrate instead.

Agreed, >20K is above atv3 specs. Personally I’ve found the sweet spot for my system. I rip BD’s then use handbreak with RF=20, FPS=30, Level-4.0. This usually keeps the kbps down to just under 10Kbps. Plays great on the plasma 1080. Streaming via wifi 5ghz (2.4 doesn’t cut it).
