Some UHD Movies stutter when direct played

Server Version#: 1.29.0.6244
Player Version#: tvOS 8.9 - iPadOS 8.9

I am having issues with certain UHD rips that will stutter badly and get out of sync when direct played on the appleTV or the iPad. The files play just fine on the PC. I have found that if I force the server to transcode the file it will not stutter and it plays fine. I also noticed on some of these that Varys reports that it is playing with a really high bitrate, which I don’t think is accurate. One of them, The Hunger Games Catching Fire, I purposely re-ripped at a lower bitrate and it still shows the same bitrate (95 mbps). I tried lowering the setting to 50 mbps playback on the appleTV and it did not transcode (and still had issues). I dropped it to 25 and Varys said it was transcoding and it played back smoothly. Most rips do not have this issue, but I have been noticing it more and more. It seems that it has become more frequent after the most recent update.

Do you have match dynamic range and refresh rate enabled in Apple TV video and audio settings. for me matching frame rate causes it to get out of sync with audio.

Is your Apple TV wired or wifi? Bitrate varies throughout a video, with actions scenes and credits usually much higher than the average of the video. ( any scene with lots going on really)

What is Varys?

I checked and they are both off.

I switched from wired to wireless a while back because the wireless AC has a much better throughput than the 10/100 port on the ATV.

I used to think that it was simply a case of the bitrate being too high for the ATV to handle, but given my experiment of lowering the bitrate on problem titles not really helping, I am less inclined to think that is the culprit.

This is Varys: ‎Varys for Plex on the App Store

Like I said, other titles with high bitrates seem to work fine.

sorry i missed that bit, are there any other commonalities with the the ones that don’t work vs the ones that do. Like the high bit rate ones that don’t work maybe are same video codec type

I will have to dig in some more and see what I can figure out.
