Just Checking Before Scanning NAS folders into Plex - Want to get it Right

Had great support last week installing Plex on my QNAP TS453D … looking good and thanks for the support.

I’m now ready to scan folders and have read the Plex NAS Folder guide but just to check I’m going to get it right

So I have a very vailla QNAP folder structure which I’ll paste below. And I’m just looking at the folder structure for Plex which is new to me and less familiar. And finally I’m reading that Plex likes it’s data compiled in a certain way to get the best out of it … which makes sense.

Trouble is, I’m struggling to reconsile the three variables there. If I put screenshots of each below, that question might make clearer sense…

This is what I see just prior to asking Plex to scan my NAS folders …

And this is the near vanilla QNAP folder structure (with a couple of errors and duplications in there) … for some reason I accidently created a folder called ‘Hellboy’ … as in the film and filled it full of the same films in the drectory called 'Films.

I think the QNAP vanilla folder structure is close to what I understood in the Plex guide as being a good folder model. But I was just cautious before pressing ‘scan’ and creating a sub standard mess.

Would be great to get some informed comment if this folder structure is ‘good enough’ or I should go back to the drawing board.

I find all my QNAP folders in the Plex folder called Cachedev1_data. I assume that’s the right place … although I only found that through trail and error.

Many thanks in advance

Ok so. The FileStation 5 image. Which of those folders are all your movies going to be in?

Is it going to be Films? or Movies? Or Kids Movies? Or all three of those?

Plex likes to see folder structure of Main Movie folder then sub folders. The main thing to remember is to always separate your TV Shows from your Movies. So if you are going to have TV Shows create a new folder for those.

In your Plex folder picture you would need to navigate to the folder that has the movies in it. Its hard to tell from your image it doesn’t look like that folder is there, you might need to scroll down. make sure you made the folder visible on your network. But you would need to find the Films or Movies or Kids Movies folder and select that one. Or select all three and Plex will then create a library based on the folders you select.

I hope that makes sense in general sense. Also the creating libraries Support Article might help give you some more details. Here is the link if you want to check it out: Creating Libraries - Support Article

Do NOT put your medias in the QNAP Multimedia folder!

See: Qnap faq.....read me first!

And recommend you create a new shared folder named like Medias

Then below that, create a folder with the name of the libraries you need, and point your different libraries to the relevant folder

Hi there … you right, it’s all three  … but I can move those around or as you say, put them as sub folders without any great problem I think. And fortunately I do have TV in a separate folder.

It sounds like it’s best to rearrange in the QNAP structure first before moving? If I were to to do that … e.g Movies then three sub folders under it, that might work better?

And that said, I’m also happy to conform to the ‘best’ Plex format if it makes life similar further down the road… e.g if it was just Movies and TV and Photos and Music. That would also work.

Thanks for the quick reply and direction. What would you do … stick to the simplest standard Plex recommended format?

Hi there and thanks for sending the link and indeed the advice.

No problem to create a folder and move data to it. So you would create the primary directory at Medias then underneath have Movies, TV, Photos and Music?

Off to have a read of the link. Is good advice.

Correct

Then remember to point the relevant libraries to the subfolder!

Many thanks for that … will move some QNAP stuff around in the morning and then try the library scan. I have to confess to only ever using the vanilla out the box QNAP structures so that’s a small learning curve in itself. But I’m sure will be OK.

I’m sure I’ll be back with some more Q&A after doing this but we are on the way …
