Just plain stops - please help

qts 4.5.1.1495 on a tvs-671

not sure when this started as I have been busy lately and although I have been keeping up with updates, have not been using much.
Will run OK for a few hours, I leave to do other things and come back and PMS is not accessible from anything. most times re-starting service fixes it again, but sometimes requires full reboot of nas. Has been rock solid for 3 years. my skill level is 0, can’t even seem to figure out if it has crashed or if it is just not accessible. Any help would be appreciated. Logs attached. (File removed)

I have been seeing a lot of strange reports for QTS 4.5.1.

Can you back down to the something around 4.4.3.1439 ?

Too many unexplained failures since 4.5.1 was released. I think it’s an unstable train but I have been busy on Synology and not had time to investigate

My PMS has been running for 28 days without incident if that helps provide insight.

I can, but to be honest it scares the crap out of me. My understanding is that some MAJOR security issues where patched in the last 3 months that going to 4.4 would leave open. Also found stories of hosed systems and lost arrays from people trying this exact downgrade. If I have to, I have to, but i don’t have 20TB of external storage laying around to do a full off chassis backup of all data. ether way, i will sleep on this. Thanks.

That’s fine.

If you’ll grant me the time I need to complete my work on Synology (nearly done),
I will then have time available to research further.

I have done several upgrades & downgrades of QTS over the past few years.

I also have the luxury of being in Linux for my workstation, only exposing a single random Plex port, and a Netgate pfSense secure firewall to protect everything.

absolutely. I can live with the manual restarts for a while, and if I get impatient then I will just have to risk the downgrade. Saving for an upgrade on my firewall and have so many things running on the qnap with manually forwarded ports that I am not what you would call “best practices” by a long shot. Made my own bed. If you do get a chance to check it out later just let me know. Thanks again for all you do for the community.

FWIW,

I use a Netgate pfSense appliance (not plugging them - just sharing).

I have ZERO problems .
I see port scans which fall into the bit bucket and they don’t stop to try and find anything… I am a literal “hole in the internet” which is how it should be.

I know they aren’t cheap boxes but given my experience, I’m about to upgrade to a faster one (just got gigabit internet and a 2.5 Gbps-capable S33 modem)

when you do have a chance to take a look, these logs might be more useful (directly after 2 crashes in a row)

@rbaldauf

Thank you for those logs.

Wow, they are hard crashes.

In the interest of supporting everyone, I have updated my QNAP to QTS 4.5.1.1495.
I am now loading PMS 1.21.1.3830.

Let’s see if I can break it.

If so, I have the tools on hand to figure out where it failed.

update as the plot thickens, plex and OS reside on m2 drive, media resides on the spinning array. I noticed that this was occurring after time of inactivity. so I turned off disk standby mode and it has been stable. my electric bill wont allow me to leave it like this, but now i have a path to look down.

While you’re looking down that path,

Here’re the tech specs for the power to guide you.

TVS-671-i3-4G:
   HDD Standby: 38.72
   In Operation: 66.30

TVS-671-i5-8G:
   HDD Standby: 36.4
   In Operation: 62.18

(with 6 x WD WD20EFRX hard drive installed)

Doing the math:

1. 62W = 0.062 kW
2. 0.062 * 24 h / day = 1.488 kwh / day
3. 1.488 kwh / day * 30 days = 44.64 kwh / month
4. 44.64 * $0.10 / kwh = $4.64/ month

So yeah, over a year, it will add up.

Ouch. that just shot a hole in my “dad logic”. My tricked out PC eats power like there is no tomorrow, so it just feels like the NAS must as well. Then you come along and do the math. I went and pulled up the power usage on my ups and even with the overhead of my older UPS, and my entire network infrastructure with lots of poe, i am still pulling less than 170w. I am truly making a mountain out of a mole hill. I guess i will just leave the disks spinning until qnap gets their stuff straightened out. Thank you for shattering my delusions, and as always thanks for all of your work for the community.

Does this mean I should be glad I could help or  ?
