That’s honestly what I expected. My theory is that the new app hands off to Windows to control everything, which reduces overhead for Plex (and it’s why it can still to multichannel audio on speakers directly connected to the computer). If they added HDMI passthrough into it, it’s a layer of complexity that would likely require manual work for different hardware configurations.
Edit: Though, after re-reading it, he never says “never”, it’s just an assumption based on verbiage (“will not”). I personally don’t expect it to change though.
No, he doesn’t say never, however further up in the post I did ask for a specific answer, so it was either sidestepping the question, or it’s an attempt at a more gentle “never”.
For those who are as frustrated with this announcement as I am, I have written an alternative player for Plex. It uses mpv and allows full control of video playback through the mobile app. The app is intended to function similar to Chromecast in that is has no UI to select what to watch without using another app to cast to it, but it has the full power of mpv behind it. Currently I have confirmed it works on Linux, but it should work on other platforms.
It died for a very long time and seemed abandoned then suddenly a few weeks ago there was an update in the nightlies.
Then suddenly they announce the abandonment. Not much makes sense anymore.
Keep in mind that if you are using a NUC, anything starting with the Skull Canyon and later is not supported by the kernel version of LE8.2 (Linux distro which embedded PMP is running on)
Working like a charm so far… Fires up really quick, snappy on the menus and passing through all audio. Also surprised to see the current UI with version 2.39.0.1001, so loving it so far
For the vast majority of high-end media, the streaming box trinity of Roku/Apple TV/SHIELD do great, and keep improving. Roku recently announced support for 7.1 audio passthrough, as an example.
People, myself included, think it’s hilarious you just called me a “suit”. It’s possible you’re new here.
