Killing PMP

That’s on my agenda for today

Okay, I’ve tested them both now, and you can see the results below (I had to rename to test1 and test2 due to the scanner ignoring sample).

Ill test my end - because i dont even get the HEVC main 10 HDR information dispalying for me.

After Plex removed support for OpenPHT, I really threw myself into PMP as this was supposed to be the future.
Now a few months down the line, I find that they are phasing out PMP tv support?
So whilst I currently have my server connected by HDMI directly - I will have to change this to stream externally to the crappy Samsung app on my tv

Surely this cannot be true? 95% of all my family’s watching is done on the Samsung tv

Sadly it’s very true.
However Plex have a decent-ish track record for server updates not breaking stuff.
Apparently some are still using PHT without issue after all these years.
It’s not like everything will break next January.

Well they broke OpenPHT a few months back, and that was the reason I finally moved to PMP.
Plex is such an integral part of my families life, it is such a shame to see this happen

But Plex were never in control of OpenPHT.
Unlike PHT.

Yes, however, their update broke OpenPHT (afaik PHT died a long time ago - hence moving to OpenPHT). I understand that OpenPHT now works,as Plex rolled their update back.
However, I expect that to die too, as no one is updating OpenPHT anymore.

However, I am wondering if I have read this right…are Plex just doing away with the TV part of PMP with Desktop AF, so Desktop AF will still work as a player? - or are they sinking Desktop AF too?

Desktop AF is the replacement.(If you can call it that)
But correct no TV mode.

I recently updated (for the last time, apparently) my OpenPHT - it worked fine for while, but the audio suddenly went belly up.

PMP got an upgrade - installed it yesterday and playback is greatly improved. I guess that’s where I’ll stay, until I have to do something else. Maybe by that time Windows Player will be stable enough to use, but I’ll have to control it with a phone app.

Life with Plex is a series of work-arounds. Nothing much ever changes in that regard.

@ericmatthys
This is really good news. Can you explain (or get someone else to) why this same attitude wasn’t given to users of Roku? I mean, you want to encourage people to go to streaming devices (of which Roku is one of the most financially acceptable), but you’ve intentionally broken people who relied on the RetroPlex application, rather than just " stopping feature development and bug fixes".

I’ll take @axemanuk666 up on his suggestion; @elan, how much would you require to open source the last version of the RetroPlex code?

I find the new download function to be a significant downgrade over the existing Metro app. I can’t vouch for the original desktop player though. The new download function doesn’t support transcoding, so good luck syncing 40GB 4k video to your tablet.

I really don’t have an issue with migrating to new clients/etc, but they should be feature-complete BEFORE the old clients are removed. The Metro app is no longer in the Store.

When did that happen? I heavily use RasPlex which uses OpenPHT and I’ve never had an issue. I’m still using PMS 1.14.1 though so if it was something that happened in PMS after that version then that makes sense but it wouldn’t have been anything with plex.tv

I will say, however, that I am concerned that one day I’ll wake up and things will be broken because of something changing on plex.tv (and likely without notice). I have also had issues with the updates they roll out for Samsung and Roku. RasPlex has been my only completely stable client (besides PMP).

:wave:t3: Hello, fellow forum travellers and Plex lovers :wave:t3:

We’ve heard you, loud and clear; we’ve had a number of discussions internally over the last few days, and we come bearing three commitments to you:

  1. We will keep PMP in TV mode working as it is today and will fix serious issues which impact the product for the foreseeable future.

  2. We will continue to invest in our player technology on streaming devices both to increase media compatibility, as well as to bring more “HTPC” features there (e.g. video zoom modes). We will also do a better job at communicating their capabilities, as it’s pretty hard to get an accurate picture of that. Look for more information on that soon!

  3. We are now actively investigating the best way to continue supporting HTPCs as a platform.

Thank you all for speaking up and sharing your views (the vast majority of you did so in a kind and constructive way), we always appreciate it! To the one guy who called me a suit, well, I’m not going to live that one down

Wow!!
That’s really awesome. I no longer use PMP but anything that stops personal attacks on Plex employees, ninjas and everyone else is always great news.

You know what?

THAT is a surprise - but a welcome one.

That’s a great compromise spot, great call @elan.

One question: How does this apply to embedded? Just curious if embedded will be updated to work with recent hardware, or if it will go into maintenance and hardware support will stay where it currently is.

Also, you’re 100% correct that it’s nearly impossible for someone to see what capabilities are available via different devices. The combinations available can be overwhelming. That info will probably help many users, especially new ones.

Thanks!

Thank you @elan, that’s great to hear!

Quick question then.

Are you gonna keep maintaining PMP on the side and keep Plex for Windows too? Or are you gonna merge them together somehow?

Seems a bit counter-productive to maintain 2 differents apps, with very similar capabilities.

Seems more like 3 different apps - there is also the Metro app which they retired, though it looks like it is still working. I don’t really have any interest in PMP, but I am really annoyed that the Metro app was removed as the replacement does not support transcoding for offline viewing. It just downloads full-quality videos for offline use and doesn’t use the regular UI for them either. On a tablet that is a LOT of space use, and I’m not sure if it will even be able to play at that bitrate…
