Lack of sound on playback when the media is AC3/DTS/etc - ie. anyhting but 2 channel

OK, sure this has been covered before (but failed to find anything using searches),

Plex android app on an android tablet (Asus ZenPad), had it for a few years, all used to work fine.

Not used it for a while, updated to current version of the app, and now no sound on any media with AC35.1/DTS/etc, only sound on stuff that’s simple stereo.

If you force the player to transcode, then you have sound again, but of course, then the server get’s hammered transcoding the video as well as audio.

in settings on the app, optional audio support is set to none (as AC3/EAC3/DTS/TrueHD are all unsupported).

So, two questions:

  1. why is there no sound in the first place?
  2. if the tablet does not support AC3 etc (and it doesn’t), why does Plex not just automatically transcode the audio?

Bear in mind the very same app on my android phone works just fine with exactly the same settings.
