Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156
Player Version#: Various
Since this latest version I am seeing players that are on the LAN sometimes connect via the external WAN IP number. I don’t recall ever seeing this before and am confused about why it is happening.
The players are all TVs connected to the LAN via wifi, so it doesn’t make sense to me why they are essentially connecting remotely. Any suggestions for what I can check on assuming this is some kind of config issue?
BTW, the only thing that I can recall has changed recently is that I added home users to my setup so home users now appear on these TV’s.
What is the LAN IP segment?
Does the host have an active firewall blocking the primary ports?
In Settings - Server - Network - Show Advanced, are the network segment lists correct?
The last section (Remote Access Workaround) in this support article suggests that this might occur if DNS rebinding protection is present and that the local client is being redirected through remote access.
So, is there any reason why DNS rebinding protection would have become an issue in your environment? If so, your local clients’ connections may be getting hairpinned through the WAN side of your router as a result, therefore showing that as the connected IP address.
No firewall. This is happening in two different households, mine and my sons.
My lan is 192.168.0.0/24, his is 192.168.1.0/24. Neither of us have active firewalls. All servers are ubuntu 18.04.
I have two servers, the problem has happened on both. One server is connected via wifi, the other by cat 5. My son has one server connected via cat 5.
On all three servers the LAN Networks box is blank, which the instructions indicate ‘If left blank, only the server’s subnet is considered to be on the local network.’ That seems like the correct setup for us.
All servers use DHCP. Mine obtain a reserved IP from the TP Link router and DNS pointing to google’s servers ,8.8.8.8, and 8.8.4.4. I believe my sons setup is similar but I don’t have remote access to check is his router setting for DNS (I know he has an address reservation for the PMS server cause I set it up).
I don’t see how DNS Rebinding is the problem here but admit that subject is above my pay grade :). We have different ISPs and the problem started for both of us on the last PMS server upgrade, so I doubt that rebinding at the ISP level is the issue since it is unlikely both of us suddenly had that happen when one ISP is Cox and the other ATT.
In all cases the problem shows up on TV sets, one Samsung with builtin Tizen app connected wifi and the other Vizio with an Amazon Firestick app connected cat 5. I can check Tautulli history and see all three servers with mixed connections to these clients, sometimes at the 192.168.x.x address and other less frequent times at the WAN address for that household. big issue is that when the connection shows the WAN address it is sometimes forcing transcoding of media that direct plays when LAN connected.
Finally caught it. Hasn’t happened again on my servers since 12/20 but just happened on my sons server. Time mark is 06:39 playing Once Upon a Time in London on Samsung TV connected wireless to the LAN at IP 192.168.1.28 yet plex sees it at the WAN address.
