Local Server Showing as Remote

Server Version#: 1.25.9.5721
Player Version#: Any

Plex Server running on Windows Server 2016. Server is no longer accepting connections to LAN IP.

Server works, but local connections (Windows, Android, Tizen, FireOS) are transcoded/relayed. Server is listed in web app as “remote.”

Are those devices and your Plex Media Server on the same network/subnet?
Any VPNs that might be getting in the way?

Same subnet, server is LAN DNS server. No VPN. Setup has worked as expected for years.

What is the behavior if you enable the setting:
Settings → Network → Treat WAN IP As LAN Bandwidth

This isn’t a solution, just a troubleshooting step. If that works, that indicates a likely DNS rebinding protection issue.

I’m also seeing my server show up as remote. For context this is running on an Unraid Docker with a host network connection. I had the preferred network interface set to the internal docker interface (I remember setting this for a particular reason but I can’t remember the reason why now). I tried adding 192.168.0.0/24 as a LAN network but it still shows as remote. Only changing to the external network interface allows me to get the server to show as Nearby. Any guesses as to why setting the LAN network to my LAN subnet wouldn’t work in this case? I have Treat WAN IP as LAN Bandwidth turned on.

Interestingly enough, this setting is checked, as is “enable relay.” I have definitely never touched either setting.

The relay isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can be very helpful for users with certain network limitations. That’s why this option is enabled by default

Just to get this straight:

  • if your remote access setup is properly working, the relay won’t be used no matter if the option is enabled or not
  • if your remote access setup isn’t working, enabling the relay option could provide a basic/limited level of access; if the option is disabled, your server will simply not be accessible.
