The problem I’m trying to solve is that:

  • I want subtitles to be on by default
  • This makes language-inappropriate subtitles turn on

In this example, a French-language subtitle was chosen - this doesn’t match the default audio (English). I am very “just installed Duolingo” in French, which makes the subtitles extremely distracting (this preference resets for each episode)

I’d really like an allowlist for subtitle languages, it seems very logically sound that it should only be showing me subtitles I would understand

In your example there are no other subtitles available so I’m not really clear what you expected in that case.

Do you have your preferred audio and sub languages set?

Both audio and subs were/are set to English

I desired subtitles not to be shown in the situation where my preferred subtitle language is unavailable

I know just a small bit of French, which makes it even more distracting than other languages

Fundamentally I think this could be an auto-select subtitle mode preference entry of “only preferred language”

Manually selected == “off”
Shown with foreign audio seems to be honoring preferred audio
(presume that’s if not media(preferred_audio_lang) then subtitle(auto-select))
Always enabled == “always on, pick a language”

Do you mean you want non-English subtitles to be hidden from the subtitle selection or is this about the non-English subtitles having been selected/activated?

Generally – if you enable automatic audio/subtitle selection, Plex will stick to selecting only the subtitles based on your audio/subtitle language preferences. This is unless you have manually selected another subtitle for a specific item.

I’m really confused as for what you’re suggesting (probably more so after reading your 2nd post). My apologies if it’s clear and I’m just not thinking straight…

It played a video file with English audio (only) and French subtitles (only) attached, in a situation where:
Preferred audio → EN
Preferred subtitles → EN
Auto-select subtitle mode → Always Enabled

I didn’t select anything, it was all automatic. So from my perspective, “Always Enabled” means pick a non-preferred language subtitle over nothing, and the experience of having a non-preferred (foreign-to-me, unreadable, distracting) subtitle enabled is annoying. The desired behavior would be English audio but no subtitles.

English audio, English subtitles: Great, preferences fulfilled (I’m HOH)
English audio, No subtitles: Good, and healable by UX (download new ones)
English audio, French subtitles: Actively Bad

Thanks for clarifying. In that Case what you describe appears to be in line with the supposed standard behavior. Could you start playing the video, wait approximately a minute and then collect your server logs to share them here? They might show what’s happening here…
