Lately the transcoder is transcoding when nothing is playing.. why? (PMS linux)

This has happened 3 times now since I updated PMS to version 1.9.6.4401 (beta channel, linux) about a week ago. I’m not sure what version I had previously but it was a couple months old.

For no apparent reason whatsoever, I hear my server fans spin up and go to check what’s going on and Plex is transcoding something, except nobody is watching anything. It’ll sit there and transcode for an hour or more with the CPU running full tilt.

In this case, I had just added 2 movies to my library, and scanned library files. Scanning finished, and the server started transcoding one of those two movies.

There was one more update for PMS, so just now I updated it to 1.9.7.4460. After about 1 minute of Plex starting back up, it started transcoding the other movie I added to my library.

I also do not have “optimized versions” enabled. I’ve had plex running on this same server for over 4 years and this has never happened

Is there someone doing some syncing to a mobile device?

Definitely not… and it was transcoding the same 2 movies I had JUST added. One of them started transcoding a minute after I restarted my plex service after the update.

When this happened a few days ago, I had just finished watching a movie on my computer… then shut my computer off to go to bed. Sure enough I hear my fans ramp up and SSH into the server from my phone, and my server is transcoding the same movie I just stopped watching.

This always happens to me. I have to fully close the movie by hitting the X to stop it if not it keeps popping up in the transcoder and manually trying to stop thru Plex wont work either.

Most likely it is due to chapters and bif files.
