Latest plex won't upgrade

Server Version#: v1.40.2.8395 (32 bit)

Hi all,

Latest Plex update won’t install - I get the usual message about go and make a cup of tea etc after clicking to update, but nothing happens and the server just terminates.

I noticed in the release notes that this version will move an install from 32 bit to 64 bit. To be honest I didn’t even realise I was still running the 32-bit client!

Anyway, checking the logs on my plex server I found this file Plex Update Service Launcher.log - contents pasted below.

Does it update if you install manually? Did you have the existing one installed as administrator?

You are currently running version 1.40.2.8395 on the server “Larry’s Plex Server”. Version 1.40.3.8555 is now available

I’m having a similar issue. The download appears to happen in a fraction of a second, then I see the “get a cup of tea” message. If I click on Retry, I see “Something went wrong” for about a half second, and then I go back to the Download Now button. My Plex Update Server Launcher log reads:

Jun 14, 2024 17:21:36.579 [12824] INFO - Plex Update Service Launcher v1.40.2.8395-c67dce28e - Microsoft PC x64 - build: windows-x86

The server appears to be running through this and never halts. I’ve never had an update issue before this one.

As a last-ditch effort, I will try rebooting the entire PC.
UPDATE: Rebooting had no effect.
UPDATED UPDATE: I installed the 64-bit version and the server kept crashing. Then I had a suspicion that there were permission issues, so I reinstalled the 64-bit version as Admin, and Voila!, it’s solid as a rock. This is day 2 now and no crashes. I don’t know if this will work for anyone else, but I thought I’d share.

Does it work if running installer manually?

Can you point me to how to install manually? I did not find this in the help docs. TIA!

Download it from our downloads page and run the installer like when you first installed it.

I have the same problem(

Looks like you have PMS installed to a custom path (on your D: drive). There was a change made in the previous release for 64 bit that would prevent automatic updates from working due to this. I’m not entirely sure what would happen when the previous version was the 32bit version so I’d suggest just following this same advice:

  • We have identified an issue where automatic updates were not respecting custom paths for existing Windows 64-bit installs. Unfortunately, any automatic fix would introduce security vulnerabilities so we encourage users who installed in a custom path to uninstall and then manually reinstall Plex Media Server.

So I went to the 64-bit version, and it runs for about a minute, seemingly perfectly, and then crashes. I did this 5X, rebooted, etc.

I then downloaded the updated 32-bit version and all is well.

Is there anything obvious as to why the 64-bit version crashes (and I don’t see a crash report file!) after running a minute or so?

Thanks all for the replies, I installed it manually and all seems to be OK!

Server Version :1.40.2.8395

Hi,

Add me to the list getting a similar error running the update through the Plex UI. The last few lines on my update log file are a bit different however

Jun 16, 2024 13:51:32.758 [9636] DEBUG - [UpdateService/Install] Auto-migration to 64 bit is in progress in the background (pid: 11952). Exiting UpdateService.

Jun 16, 2024 13:51:33.360 [15148] DEBUG - Win32Service::serviceMain: Service stopped with exitcode 0

I’m pretty sure I installed Plex to the default location (that update went in fine)

I’ll try the manual update and report back later (when my heart rate slows down!)

Also , should I kill the update service PID 11952?

Bill

Update: Skipped this version, ran the update to 1.40.4.8679 without issue. Weird
