Last 4 updates from Plex have failed

Server Version#: Version 4.51.3
Player Version#:

I have had plex loaded on my windows server for years. The last 4 updates have failed to successfully install. The installation has failed so bad in that I have had to manually download the latest version and install it. My settings are not lost but this used to be very reliable and now it seems like this process is now broken. Can someone please just fix this. Let me add that this has left the installation in an unusable state that requires me to go and download the latest version and manually install it using the default settings.

I had the same problem with the mac-version that since the last couple updates I couldn’t update.
I received an error see my post: Failed to write file: File name to long

But after trying like you suggested. Downloading the package and installing it manually. I was able to update.
Hope they can fix it in the future.

I don’t think this is related to a filename being to long. This is the auto update fails to install. It attempts to install completely. Leaves plex in an unusable state that requires me to go and manually download the install from the download section of plex.tv and install it. Then everything is all hunky dory.

Oh, okay, well for me the error that was shown when I use the update function was when it was downloaded and it started the update, it failed because of the error that some filename is to long.
It never complete the update the only thing what then can be done is hit “OK” and then it asks to restart the server.
I was giving you the info in case in the windows version the error doesn’t pop-up and so the server also not restart which leaves it in an unusable state.

I haven’t seen any other reports of this. I also haven’t seen this in my testing or the updater. If you can provide the installer logs and tell me when (date and time) the last failure was, we can investigate.

So it just did it again today with the latest update. I installed it and then the entire website was unavailable from every device within my network. The only way to get it fixed it to download the latest version from the download and ‘repair’ the install. Unfortunately, i did this before i noticed this reply. I will have to know where the install logs are located to upload.

The install logs are along side your regular PMS logs in their own “Installer Logs” folder. You will need to grab these manually, they are not included in the zip file. Plex Media Server Logs | Plex Support

Ok I have the log files. Where do I send them?

Just post them here.

I have auto update turned off personally. I just update if there is a feature or something I want rather than upgrading for no reason when everything is running just fine for me and then possibly break something.

It happened again today. And I uploaded the logs per requested from MovieFan.Plex but no updates. Is this even being investigated?

Where are these logs you speak of? I don’t see them in this thread nor in a pm.

I posted them but cannot remember where or how. i am attaching the same ones i did the last ones herePlex 0Installer Logs.zip (895.0 KB)

Hmm. Your log shows it did update.

MSI (s) (CC:C8) [02:04:39:311]: Product: Plex Media Server – Installation completed successfully.
MSI (s) (CC:C8) [02:04:39:311]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Plex Media Server. Product Version: 1.21.1876. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Plex, Inc… Installation success or error status: 0.

yes, everytime since you have pointed out the log file location and it fails I look. According to the logs it installs without issue but it fails to start. It is not running and when i launch any of the links to the server it indicates that it is offline. If i go to the website on the server, the site is not found. The only solution is to manually download the installation and repair the installation which appears to fix the issue. So something else is going on with the installation that does not appear to be getting logged or trapped by the installation. Even rebooting the server does not fix the issue it is only a repair of the installation that does it.

What links do you mean? Have you tried starting PMS manually by clicking on the icon in the start menu? It’s possible the installer is just failing to start PMS after the update.

Tried to update to the latest (MacOS - 1.23.2.4656) and got the same file name too long error that @PlexReygaert posted here: Failed to write file: File name to long

PMS restarts fine, I’m going to try a manual download and update, but wanted to let the Plex team and @anon18523487 know about the error and that it is still an open issue.

Can confirm this issue is still happening on a Mac Mini running High Sierra, trying to update to Plex Server 1.23.2.4656. A manual download and update works, but the automated update is failing in the same way that @PlexReygaert and @bigpoppa_miller described.

The link that I use is i go to my admin screen by clicking the 'Open Plex…" from the taskbar of my server where Plex is installed. It then goes to the website where the webpage indicates an error. I will grab a screen shot of the error

Ok, that opens the hosted plex web client. If you are not seeing your server, it is possible that you are signed into a different Plex account. Try signing out and back in. If that doesn’t work, check the steps in Why am I locked out of Server Settings and how do I get in? | Plex Support to verify that the server is claimed with the same Plex account you are singing into the Web client with.

  • Are you running Plex server as a Windows system service?
  • Have you ever started Plex server with the right-click option to “Run as Administrator”? (Never, ever do that!)
  • Have you re-located the Plex data folder away from its default location?
  • Use the Windows Task Manager (CTRL+Shift+Esc, then “More Details”, go to the tab “Services”) to determine whether the “Plex Update Service” is running.
  • Use the Windows Task Manager again to determine under which Windows user account the Plex Media Server.exe is executed (on the tab “Details”). Is the displayed user name identical to the user account which you are using to log on to your Windows machine?
