Unable to install beta updates

Server Version#: 1.40.1.8227

Hello, I posted originally in April but still haven’t seen any feedback on failed upgrades on my Windows Media Server. I’m currently at .8227, and for the last several beta releases clicking on upgrade in the app has failed. I saw another post from someone saying they couldn’t upgrade and the reply was to download and install manually.

I’ve tried running the exe directly by going to the updates folder but that also ends with an error window and then exits.

I’m just guessing, but could this be a problem when I tries to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit versions?

Should I try downloading and running the x64 version? Is there any chance it might corrupt my current installation?

Thanks,

Bill

Until you get a more comprehensive reply

I’m pretty sure I saw a note on the latest release saying it will now force install the 64bit version on 64bit Windows hardware.
Also, I upgraded from the 32 bit to 64 bit version without issue but that was a long while ago.

What else is running on your server?

That’s just it. I’m running as little as possible. I have 32GB and only about 9GB in use:

Earlier today I even closed down Plex and ran the exe manually from the uploads folder.

Download the 64-bit version from plex.tv.

Ok, that’s what I’ll do. I wasn’t sure if I should… if it would do anything to my libraries

The 64-bit installer will detect and remove the 32-bit version.

It updates only the application. It does not touch your media files or the Plex Data Folder.

After installation, when you run Plex Media Server, it will update the database schema if necessary, the same as with any other PMS update.

If you see a “503 maintenance” message, wait a few minutes and refresh the web page. Do not stop/reboot/etc. Things will just start over the next time you run PMS.

I must have a bigger problem with my system. I tried installing the x64 of 1.40.3.8555 and got this message during the attempt to uninstall the x32 version:

I then went to windows apps to uninstall from Windows and also got an error message, and this log:

Reboot the PC via shutdown or restart

Check for corrupt system files
See Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

  1. Open an elevated CMD window (run as administrator).

  2. C:\ DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  3. C:\ sfc /scannow

If the above found/corrected any issues, then reboot the PC again.

Now try to run the Plex 64-bit installer again.

Additional Info:

I searched the forum for problems uninstalling Plex on Windows. The System File Checker procedure helped in some instances.

One post referenced a list of Microsoft Installer Errors. 1603 means “file in use” and a restart/shutdown may fix that.

Windows 10 Elevated Command Prompt

Windows 10: System File Checker procedure

Got it! I’m good.

I ran dism and sfc and neither found any problems, but then I ran the 64bit upgrade again (this time also as “administrator”) and it completed successfully. I’m at 8555 and x64 now.

Thanks,

Bill

You will run into problems if you install Plex as administrator. You should install it using the user that will run the application.

This post has additional info:

Hmm, I seem to be alright. I only have the 1 account on my Windows system and it has administrator rights. A quick check after rebooting, plex seems to be running ok. No problem running content, and the files and folders I’ve checked within “Plex data folder” all seem to have my account in the security settings with full permissions.

I’ll watch it for errors and if needed, will reset the permissions in that folder.
