Latest release has broken/changed the behaviour of loading of album art

Since installing the latest release I notice that Plex is no longer defaulting album art to local metadata, instead it is defaulting to some horrible low res downloaded album art.

If I go into edit the album I can see the beautiful high res image image obtained from local metadata as an option. But seriously, I have a very large collection and do not wont to be manually changing the art work every time.

The music library is configured to “Prefer local media” automatically obtain cover art from “Local Files Only”. And this was indeed working fine up until the latest release was installed.

Server Version#: 1.20.2.3402
Player Version#: N/A

Yes.

Local Media Assets (Artists) is at the top of the list for Albums.
Local Media Assets (Albums) is at the top of the list for Personal Media, Discogs and Last FM.

It may be unrelated to the latest release but I am in middle of loading my 3,0000 albums in Plex when I noticed there was an update. After installing the update I noticed the change in behavior.

I have been loading the albums in batches.

Once I have checked all the metadata is complete in a batch I copy the files into the directory for the new music library. I then trigger the ‘Scan Library Files’ in Plex to index the new batch.

After Plex had finished scanning the files in the last batch I noticed the change in behavior with the album art.

The batches are no larger than 20 albums.

I had noticed that while Plex is scanning for new files, the new albums appear with artwork that I assume Plex has downloaded from somewhere and then change to the embedded artwork before the scanning process finishes. However, now it doesn’t change to the embedded artwork. If I edit the album I can see the embedded artwork as an option but I don’t wont to have to manually edit every single album.

I would like to reiterate that this behavior appears to have changed with the last release. The artwork was being set correctly prior. I have made no change to the configuration of Plex or the library in question.

I too have created a test library of four albums from the one artist. Using this album as an example you can see that Plex has defaulted to the wrong cover art.

The actual embedded cover art and metadata is shown below.

If I edit the alb um in Plex you can see that it did extract the embedded cover art but defaulted to the wrong artwork…

To make matters worse, Plex has defaulted to the lowest resolution version of the cover art as well.

I wonder if this change in behavior is dependent on the music format. In my case the files are ALAC (M4A) files.

I was about to reply with a screenshot showing that my music was organized in the appropriate folder structure (as it is), when I noticed that for some albums (the ones I am having issues with) there were additional file in the folder, probably left-over by some other music server software.

Deleting these extra files and then refreshing the metadata has solved the problem.

Today’s lesson is “Correlation is not causation”.

Thanks for your patience and assistance.

Debris left-over from Windows Media Center from years gone by.

I no longer user Windows and all the files are on my Synology NAS. There were just a few albums where these files still existed and I missed that when copying over the last batch.

I’ll keep an eye out as I copy the music into the new library location.

Thanks again Trumpy. I appreciate your help.
