Latest Update Not Saving Hardware Transcoding Device

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9522
Player Version#: N/A
Operating System#: Windows 11

Since updating to the latest PMS, Changing Hardware Transcoding Device from Auto to intel or Nvidia on my Dell G15 laptop doesnt save after a server restart or full system restart. Only noticed because after installing the latest update, I went to have a look at the new options, & noticed that Hardware Transcoding Device had been reset to Auto. Latest public version before this update never had this issue, & nothing on my system has changed (No windows or driver updates), Except for the new PMS version.

Anyone else confirm? Im really at a loss here…

Same for me.

Windows 11
Reverts to “Auto” and I want the Nvidia card selected. In Auto, the intel iGPU is used.

Mine reverted back to “Auto” as well after a system reboot.

WIn 10.

1.41.5.9522.

Also here.

  • Windows 11
  • Server: 1.41.5.9522

Laptop I noticed this on in this threads original post, Had a i5-13450HX w/ a iGPU, & a RTX 3050 dGPU. No matter what, The Hardware Transcoding Device would always revert back to Auto, & default to the Intel iGPU after a PMS restart or a system reboot.

Just setup PMS on a PC with a i5 13400F & RTX 4060, But this CPU doesn’t have built in iGPU. Changing Hardware Transcoding Device still reverts back to Auto after a PMS restart or a system reboot, But obviously defaults back to the RTX 4060 because the system has no other GPU for Auto to select.

Same here - I was just coming to post this issue  Version 1.41.5.9522

I never had this issue, but I did used to see my CPUs iGPU as well as my Tesla P4 card, now I only see Auto and the Tesla.

I just checked mine and I’m having the same issue. Was fine before updating to 1.41.5.9522.

I just did a test and before rebooting my GPU was showing Intel UHD Graphics. After rebooting it shows Auto.

Running on an N100, Win 11, 23H2.

Can we get a confirmation that this issue is being tracked? Still happening as of latest beta 1.41.6.9606

Just bumping this as its still happening. Ive had to disable HEVC transcoding because of it on my Dell G15 laptop incase it resets & I dont notice straight away. Im sure the Intel iGPU is capable of transcoding a few HEVC streams, But would much rather have the RTX 3050 dGPU do that heavy lifting.

Same issue here since 1.4, tried the beta 1.6 but still same issue

@ChuckPa

1st off, Im really sorry @ you from this thread!!! I was just hoping that maybe you could raise this issue up for us with the dev team if possible. Something changed in Server Version#: 1.41.5.9522 that resets Hardware Transcoding Device to Auto after a server restart. Bit of a headache if your system has multiple GPU’s, Like a iGPU & dGPU.

Like I said, Sorry to @ you into this thread, But this is one hell of a annoying bug!!!

I have a N100 CPU on Linux.

with 1.41.5.9522, it doesn’t reset after a reboot.

Would it be possible to get DEBUG server logs ?

What I would like (best)

  1. Confirm DEBUG server logging - VERBOSE logging off
    (Settings - server - General )

  2. Otherwise quiet server

  3. Setting / selecting GPU and SAVE (important)

  4. Restart server

  5. Let it sit quiet for 1 minute

  6. Download the server logs ZIP file

  7. Attach here

  8. Take 5 steps back so you’re out of arm’s reach  lol

you KNOW I only wash and break windows ?

I restarted system around 8.07 for it to reset to auto, & then started the steps you posted. Logs attached. Thanks for the quick reply @ChuckPa

@BIFFTAZ

I think I see it. Please leave your logs here until Chris has had time to review them.

I’m finishing up submitting the ticket for him.

Awesome!!! @ChuckPa thanks for looking into this for us!!! Really appreciate it!!!

@BIFFTAZ

Chris just tried to reproduce and can’t.

When he gets some time, he’s going to get the Windows registry key info for us.

With that, you can look at the value before, after setting, and after reboot.

ALL:

The registry key to query:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\HardwareDevicePath

  1. Restart the server
  2. Examine the key
  3. Now set & SAVE the setting
  4. Examine the key
  5. Restart the server
  6. Examine the key

Screenshots please so we can track and Chris can diagnose.

After the last step above, I noticed the key was the same as the step before, So again I changed Hardware Transcoding Device from Auto to RTX 3050 & saved (Because it had reset after a restart in steps 5-6), Examined key & got a different key again.
