LG C9 TV: Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error happening occasionally

Hi all,

So, I’ve got everything setup on my LG C9 Plex App to directplay (as well as in the server to allow directplay and directstream), to always use unsecure connection, burn subtitles: never, etc.

It has always direct played everything I have. MKVs, MP4s, 4K Remuxes, etc. But lately, in the last couple of months I’ve been randomly getting this Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.
I’m not sure if this is related to PGS now being able to be direct played? I’ve noticed on a specific TV show I’m watching that PGS subs just stop displaying until I restart playback but on movies etc it’s absolutely fine. The conversion failed issue happens completely randomly, all I have to do is press OK then play the file again. Sometimes it happens 2-3x per movie/tv show, sometimes none. I can’t seem to pinpoint any specific reason.

My server is an odroid n2+, so 0 transcoding power. Anything that has changed recently? Or anything anyone can point out?

Haven’t seen this issue on my LG C1 Plex app.

All I can suggest is having a look at your logs

Thanks for taking a look!

The OLED TV is connected with ethernet, both the server and TV are connected to 1GBps LAN. I’ve never had buffer issues with huge bitrate remuxes etc. There was really never an issue before as I’ve stated in OP.

Regarding that IP, that IP is my main laptop that’s connected to WIFI, was probably me testing with the Plex App on Windows but it makes no sense to be recognized as WAN? I do have an AI MESH setup, 2x routers. The laptop is connected to the second router for stronger signal but AI MESH is supposedly just an “extender” with user friendly config.

How do I get the player app logs?

I have the same problem. It started a few weeks or or maybe months ago.

I have video transcoding disabled on the server, so the error message doesn’t make any sense at all. I always direct play all files that I have on the server.

For me, the error never happens when I “normally” watch a file. But if I jump around a bit in a file, e.g. a few times forward and backward and forward again, then there is a chance that after a few seconds the error message is shown.

After the error happens and I’m back at the pre-play screen I can immediately resume the file at the error position without additional errors (unless I start jumping around in the timeline again).

Nearly all of my files are MKVs, so I can only confirm the error for MKV files. The error happens for both for 1080p and 4k files. I’m not 100% sure right now about subtitles and HDR, but I think it also happens both with and without HDR and with and without (SRT) subtitles.

Everything is connected locally via gigabit ethernet cables. Nothing else has network problems. Plex was stable until a few weeks or maybe months ago.

In that log the error happend in a MKV file with (non-HDR) 1080p H.264 video, EAC3 audio and SRT subtitles.

Which TV firmware do you have?
I know next-to-nothing about TV firmware but given the issues I had with CEC and ARC on mine, I know firmware is key

The problem might not happen with all media. Or maybe it just happens with subtitles.

If you can make it happen with a specific file, please do so.

  1. Turn DEBUG logging back on. INFO/ERROR logging is useless.
  2. Start the playback
  3. Let it fail
  4. Download the server logs
  5. Attach

Here is an example file (2.89GB) where I see similar issues to those posted, yet in my case I see a spinning circle for 1 to 2 minutes then playback resumes (LG C1).

This file contains DVB subtitles (you need to turn off to avoid subtitle burning).
Being TS it must be remuxed

If I keep subtitles on, on my DS418 – it does sit there.
If I turn them off, It takes a few seconds for the Remux to fill the output buffer and start playback ( I get to see the countdown on the BBC timer . lol )

Hi, this is a DVB-T2 recording in the UK from a HDHomeRun.

I don’t display subtitles at all.

My issue occurs if I hit skip forward multiple times in quick succession, for example 4 quick presses to jump 2 minutes - keep trying that and in a few iterations I get the hang, also see it if I use skip adverts button.

I’m unable to test for the issue with your Gods-Testfile.mkv testfile. I can play the file, but seeking or jumping around in it doesn’t work. I’ve tried seeking in the timeline, jumping with left/right buttons and jumping with channel up/down buttons. Nothing works. The timeline shows the target timestamp for a very short time and then just goes back to the current position.

If i skip multiple times in succession, I need press PLAY to continue playback.
I don’t have any other ‘hang’ .

For me, there is the expected 2-3 second spinning circle while the DS418 seeks into the right spot but that’s all I’m able to reproduce with this file.
