Transcoder crashing on Direct Play files with subtitles enabled near the end of the video

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7195 - Windows
Player Version#: various

Lately I am getting “Conversion Failed. Transcoder process crashed.” with around 2-3 minutes left at the end of videos while subtitles are enabled.

This has occurred for me on a Samsung Tizen and LG WebOS client.

However it has also been occurring for a number of people as can be seen on this 1 day old reddit thread with over 70 comments:
https://old.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/14klhv9/conversion_failed_transcoder_process_crashed/

Please note this is with direct play so I don’t think there should even be any transcoding.

Attached logs directly surrounding the time of 1 crash.

Also there is this: Transcode Errors (Samsung Tizen) - Plex Players / Smart TVs - Plex Forum related thread on the plex forums but he marked it as resolved by simply turning off subtitles which is not really a good fix for the issue…

Edit: here is the settings of the file that was playing which crashes near the end consistently on LG and Samsung players but works fine on windows player.

And just to confirm, when i disable subtitles the file does play fully without crashing on the TV players. With the subtitles on it crashes every time at the same spot but only for the TV players.

edit: removed attached files, pm me if need them re-added

I have also been having the same issue. I’m using the app on my LG smart TV or I cast from my phone. I never seem to have an issue when I use the web player from my media PC

An issue has been referred to the Plex Media Server development team for subtitle related transcoder crashes

@aamirusmandus do you have a Plex Transcoder dmp file for this crash

Jun 29, 2023 08:16:10.524 [9204] Debug — Jobs: 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Transcoder.exe' exit code for process 24372 is -1073741819 ()

I believe it depends on a registry setting - but could you look and see if there a dmp file in this directory

C:\Users\aamir\AppData\Local\CrashDumps

If you find dmp files - please zip and send to me by Private Message

If you do not find this directory or no transcoder dmp file, could you add the registry setting outlined on this support article Crash Logs: Plex Media Server | Plex Support and reproduce the problem with debug logging enabled on the server and you can send me both the server logs full zip and zip of the Plex Transcoder dmp file by Private Message - I will then check if it is the same issue that has been referred to the development team

Thank you

thanks for your response! I have sent the pm

@sa2000 Any chance that the fix for this bug will also fix the similar error that happens after seeking (see here for details)?

Same here!!!
On LG webos on new Oled

:frowning:

Ah thanks for the link, through your post I found 3 other threads about this so maybe my thread was not needed. I did search the forums before posting tho and only found the post I linked in the OP, not sure how I missed those.

Although in those threads they report “Transcoder failed” while I’m seeing “Transcoder crashed” so maybe it’s not entirely the same? But anyway if it is the same we can close this thread sorry for the inconvenience

Same exact issue - but running Plex in Docker. Huge reddit thread with people having the exact same issue - Reddit - Dive into anything

Turned off forced subtitles (SRT) on my Plex clients and the issue immediately went away.

I have the exact same problem, Linux server, playing to Samsung Tv (202) and Xbox Series X. Works fine without subtitles except I’m watching anime and don’t know Japanese.

Can also get it to work as long as I am using external subtitles, either srt or vtt work fine, I just liked having them embedded into my files because it makes the directories look cleaner.

Don’t know why Plex couldn’t add an option in the settings to specify a folder for subs but oh well, I’ll have to just have each episode and then an external srt and vtt sitting there just to be on the safe side going forward

Thank You - I have referred it to the development team

It is possible that it may be the same issue

I’m experiencing the same issue here. It seems to have started with the big webOS update that LG made.

I can replicate the issue but skipping ahead to near the end of the media once subtitles are finished.

After experiencing this type of crash numerous times, I downgraded the server to 1.31.1.6733 and haven’t had a crash since then. I’ll keep an eye on this thread to find out when the bug is fixed and it is safe to upgrade.

Looks like I too have this issue. LG app would throw up a transcode error near the end of the video if subtitle has been enabled, even though it was direct-play…

Hi all has anyone found a fix for this problem?
This first happened to me on my LG C3 TV but now it happens on all devices even the on the server itself.

Is this still working for you?

Yep, no crashes since the downgrade! I found download links for old server versions here: GitHub - axlecrusher/plex_download_urls: Archive of Plex mediaserver download URLs.
