LG @ CES

What can we expect?
Being in the market for a new TV, and with CES only two weeks away, its hard not to wonder what to expect from LG. Normally, this wouldnt be a brand Id be interested in, but given the upcoming Plex support, they are impossible to ignore. No boxes at all beneath the TV would make for a clean looking setup. But will they succeed in making the user experience as great as on OSX (UI)? What we have seen so far, hasnt been very impressive.

What are your thoughts?

Lets wait and see. I'm also in need of a TV and b.player and LG would be my choice only because of Plex support. But if UI is as bad as we've seen WITH that horrible mouse pointer I'll rather build cheap hackintosh.
That mouse pointer was so bad that I would have to think twice before I'd put that monstrosity into guest bedroom, much less living room or any other room used on regular basis :)

Lets hope LG doesnt blow it :)

I’m keeping an eye on this - but that video demo from a while back was not that impressive from a UI perspective (and a bit laggy). I’d guess they’ll be giving it a major overhaul before release. But as it stands I’d probably move my mac mini down to the TV. I’ve not been massively impressed with integrated browsers/apps etc in TVs (Panasonic mostly) as they are usually underpowered like most set top boxes.

I doubt this will be as great as we all expect it to be. And if a computer is needed with a running PMS it makes it even more useless. This is what the AppleTV2 can do, I personally would much more like to have everything on the box and just connect an USB Disk or a network storage with the raw movies on it.

But if that’s the case the TV needs several gigabytes of storage to store all the covers, skins, apps and caches. And I just doubt they will do this. If you compare to what they use now on their TVs they certainly will improve but most likely not as much as they should. But who knows.

Its a little premature to compare its features to the ATV2. First, the ATV2 requires your PMS box to reencode. Second, the ATV doesnt output 1080p nor has the horsepower even play most such files (@ 720p). We dont really know yet how the LGs will perform, but I would expect it to be able to natively play 1080p MKVs etc. If its gonna require reencoding for such formats ill be utterly dissapointed. Im guessing hardware wise, it will be great, Im mostly worried about the UI. Im also worried they will be delayed, or not bring anything this CES at all. Id expect a Windows PMS to release before they announce anything more.
