Server Version#: PlexMediaServer-1.22.2.4276-3cbd5e781-x86

Hello everyone.

I have a problem for a long time, i maked it work but no is happning again.

I just can’t see 4K movies on this 2 TVs.

For example:
These two are LOTR & Hobbit the 4K version
Hobbit LOTR

And this one is SW (the 4K77 project(
SW

You can see that is the same video codec, diferent audio, but the SW movie i can see without the problem and the other two no, i have a few more 4K movies that i can not see.

It’s makeing me crazy, i can not make it work.

The 55" TV is connected to with cable to my router, the 43" TV is on WiFi.

What can i do??

And onother problem, i can make work nothing on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S10+) noting, i have also a the last version 8.15.1.23935 April 1 2021.

I have a ACER Notbook that have the same problem :-(, only the music from my PC work :frowning:

Someone can help me?
Can i do a reset to my plex without lossing the PC folder on the app?
I also have the Plex Pass for life/

Thanks for the help in advance

A Little update, i can the the Hobbit 4K movie on my phone (when i’m on WiFi :-(, i can’t yet see nothing outside of the WiFi network)

Are the movies not showing up in the Plex app or are they listed, but you cannot play them on the LG TV?

If the latter…

With the Plex app on LG TVs, enabling PGS subtitles forces a video transcode. If your Plex server is not powerful enough to transcode 4K HDR video, then playback will buffer continuously or possibly fail altogether.

This is how the Plex LG app behaves with subtitles:

  1. Enabling image based subtitles, PGS or VOBSUB, results in a video transcode.
  2. If audio is transcoding, enabling any subtitle results in a video transcode.
  3. If audio is direct playing, text subtitles, SRT & VTT, direct play.
  4. For ASS/SSA subtitles:
    1. If Burn Subtitles = Automatic in the Plex LG app, enabling ASS/SSA subtitles results in a video transcode.
    2. If Burn Subtitles = Only Image Formats, ASS/SSA subtitles, direct play, but formatting information (color, location, etc) may be lost.

Audio limits must also be taken into account:

  • TrueHD audio will always transcode
  • dts audio formats transcode on WebOS 5+ TVs

Bottom line is, if your Plex server is not powerful enough to transcode the video, a) never enable image subtitles, and b) do not enable any subtitle if the audio is transcoding.

You can monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing to see if the video or audio is transcoding.

Do not use Plex Web. Web browsers have limited codec support. Except for Safari, they cannot play HEVC video.

Use Plex for Windows instead.

Not important.

Not important.

First, thanks for you help

Ok, i understud, we getting closer to a solution i think.

First, this is how i have the 2 LG TVs now: (if you need me to translate to englsh, let me know)

Now, this way, the few 4K movies i try, work and the SRT subtitles in the mkv file works, but not the PGS, so, the faste thin to do is download an external srt subtitle file and i done, rigth?
The extrange this is that in LOTR movie, the SRT file in the mkv, also doesn’t work :frowning:

I don’t understand why now is not working if was working before :frowning:
In the living room, is not a problem because i have a PC, so i can watch there, but in my parents room, i don’t, and i have a few TV show with PGS subtitles in spanish and is no way that i download everthing :-(, is to much haha, how can i fix this?

The other problem i still have, Plex just doesn’t work in the Remote (outside of my network)
I check everthing, i don’t understand why is not working :frowning:

And again, thanks for your help

Read the second post again and carefully.

i did, and what i can understand from that, is for some reason, if i want to see 4K with PGS, will not work :frowning:

I con not belive that my PC is not good enogth:
Case: Cooler Master Storm Scout 2

I try the same movies with external srt, and almost everything works.
I only have problem with LOTR and The Hobbit :frowning:
I will need to keep checking (for my luck, they don’t like does movies haha)

LG TVs do not support PGS subtitles and TrueHD audio. Use only .srt subtitles with compatible audio (AC3, EAC3,…).

You should avoid any 4K transcoding and HDR tone mapping at your local network anyway.

I also recommend you to read FAQ and some manuals to get a basic knowledge how PMS and limited LG app work

Thanks for the information. The TV settings are fine. My LG is configured the same.

If you enable PGS subtitles in the Plex LG app, Plex Media Server will transcode the video. This is a limitation of the Plex LG app. There is no workaround. Furthermore, the transcoded video is not HDR. The Plex LG app has always had this limitation.

Plex added HDR to SDR tonemapping as a beta feature to Plex Media Server late last year. This capability is not yet fully supported across all operating systems or GPUs. It a beta feature, which means it may not work in all situations or may cause problems when enabled. It is also very CPU intensive.

In theory, your CPU & GPU are strong enough. In practice, I’ve no idea what will happen, as I’ve no experience with the feature (I run PMS on a Synology NAS, and tonemapping is not yet supported on that platform).

You might experiment with disabling HDR to SDR tonemapping and hardware accelerated transcoding to see if that helps (Settings → Server → Transcoder).

The real fix:

As previously mentioned, if you want to watch 4K HDR movies with PGS subtitles in 4K HDR, you cannot use the Plex LG app. You must use an external device such as a Android TV box, Apple TV 4K, Roku, or a Home Theater PC.

I have an Nvidia Shield Pro and an Amazon Fire Stick 4K. Both direct play 4K HDR video with PGS subtitles enabled. The Shield has better audio support (TrueHD & dts) and works well with home theater setups and high end soundbars. If you use TV speakers or a lower end soundbar, then the FireStick could be a good fit.

The Apple TV 4K and higher end Roku devices also support 4K HDR video. I’ve no direct experience with either and do not know how well they handle PGS subtitles.

A HTPC may be an option using the recently announced Plex HTPC client. Plex HTPC is still under development, and may or may not fit your needs. The announcement thread has links to additional information including where to download the early release versions.

No i just need help with the Remote problem, Plex just doesn’t work outside of my wifi any more :frowning:

It’s on!!!
That’s, why i don’t understand why is not working :frowning:

Ok, so i’m stupid hahah.
i was try so watch the same thing that doesn’t work because of the PGS subtitles haha.
I don’t have my notebook with me to try, but, if i use the Windows Plex, is suppouse to work with the PGS??, because on my PC, on my network, they work.

Windows and Mac should support PGS

i will check tomorrow.
so the problem is that i using the samsung s10+?

Are you talking about PGS or remote access?

I own only iOS devices which don’t support PGS and have no idea about android

Plex for Windows/Mac direct plays 4K HDR media, including when PGS subtitles are enabled.

However, when streaming remotely, bandwidth limitations will come into play.

If you play media that exceeds your bandwidth limits, then Plex will transcode both the video and audio to make it fit the available bandwidth.

To test remote streaming, you may wish to start with lower bitrate media, well under the uplink speed of your Internet connection and any limits configured in Plex. After you have basic remote streaming working, then try higher bandwidth media that may need transcoding.

Be sure and check the Quality settings in Plex for Windows. Most Plex apps have a default limit of 2 Mbps for remote streaming. Change it to Maximum. You must make the change in the app itself. You cannot force it from the server or when using Plex Web. The quality/bandwidth settings in Plex Web apply only to Plex Web, not to any other client.

Any media that direct plays on your S10+ when it is on your WiFi can direct play when remote streaming.

As mentioned above, bandwidth limits may come into play, resulting in transcoding.

Also check the app settings regarding the 2 Mbps default for remote streaming.
