LG Smart TV Plex client app not seeing any free stream movies (vod)

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest for TV app

My LG Smart TV Plex app (client) does not show any of the recently released free VOD content. What might the reason for this be e.g. is it up to LG to release a new version of the app to support this? If so do you have any idea as to how long that will take?

Thanks,
Ricardo

Hi, me too, LG OLED 2016, weboe 3.0.
On my server, I have the new functionality, on smarttv’client no.

Per the support document, you need:

  • webOS 4.0+
  • Plex app v4.15 or newer

Thanks a lot for the info.
Will expected in future support for weos 3.x?

I hope so, as my LG is WebOS 3.x.

Unfortunately, Plex rarely announces product plans, so I cannot answer your question.

Maybe an employee/developer can chime in with additional information.

Have been reading around various websites and forums on this subject and hopefully this will save others having to search for the same information:

  • WebOS 4.x is only available on post-2018 TVs
  • LG rarely rolls out the latest version of WebOS to TVs older than one model year
  • TVs older than one model year have received some of the features of later versions of WebOS in the past but through “light” upgrades which do not see the major version number of WebOS incremented on the TV.
  • The LG company line is that the WebOS version number refers not just to the software but also to the hardware.
  • LG has been shipping TVs with WebOS since 2014 and previously all Plex features were supported on 4K/UHD LG TVs with WebOS 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0.

On that basis it would seem likely that the majority of Plex on WebOS users are NOT running 4.0+ and are not going to be in the foreseeable future.

One has to hope that Plex will not disappoint so many existing users and will bring support for VoD to previous versions of WebOS. LG ships millions of TVs each year and WebOS still has more market share than Android on TVs so it would be a lot of potential customers lost otherwise.

I purchased my LG at the end of 2017, and checking the WebOS version it is 5.x, but still I don’t see the streaming category. (It does show up on my android phone app.) The LG Plex app is the latest version in the LG store, last updated in Aug., 2019. I hope there will be an updates to the Plex app that will enable the streaming content.

To find the correct WebOS and Plex app for LG, go to Plex settings/about or Plex server settings/ authorised Devices.

WebOS should be 3.5 for 2017 models.

As for Plex LG app updates there have be numerous updates that occur when starting up your TV. What your seeing in the LG store is an app loader dated August 2019.

Unfortunately WebOS 3.5 does not support VOD from plex.

Thanks for the clarification on checking versions, @SE56. So it turns out I in fact have webOS 3.8.0 and Plex for LG 4.17.1. :frowning:

Thanks for the tip how to check the Plex and webOS versions. This is what i see:plex_lg

So i have the latest Plex app version but i still dont see the VOD button.

This support articles lists supported apps for VOD; LG Smart TVs aren’t yet supported (as posted earlier in this thread).

Interesting. LG TVs were listed when the document was first published.

Hopefully added back soon, and with support for older models.

That is strange, i see topics on this forum by other people with LG tv’s who can see the vod content.

LG smart TV’s with WebOS 4 + are somewhat supported but only shows one Genre at present.

Popular.

It’s now a waiting game for a fix, hopefully soon. Post Xmas would be my guess and no sooner.

Seems like there is some complicated weirdness going on with the LG webOS platform. My LG 55SK8000PUA, which is a 2018 model, received the VOD section almost immediately. And it worked right away; I actually played some content for a minute to confirm.

Now, however, while the section is still present, it shows only this message:
“No Content Available for the Library - This library is currently empty. The server owner still needs to add media or remove any filters that may prevent it from appearing here. Please reach out to the owner for assistance.”

Here’s a pic of the screen (not sure of any way for direct capture of native smart TV app):
