LG vs Plex

Hopefully if I give some information/troubleshooting stuff regarding this issue, someone can help me as I really have given up with Plex.

On my new 4K LG TV I am using Plex locally - other than 4K content which doesn’t work at all on any Plex Player I’ve used - it works just fine. On the same 4K LG TV at a remote site (parents) using my Plex server, it buffers on almost all videos, even those which are standard definition. I thought it was a speed issue but it’s not.

  1. Speed test at remote site gives 98Mbps download.
  2. Speed test at server side gives 16Mbps upload.
  3. 8 other users (non-LG) using my Plex server with no issues.
  4. 4K content on other platforms at remote site work fine (Netflix and BBC iPlayer).
  5. Plex on the Amazon fire stick at remote site crashes instantly no matter what contents I choose.
  6. Direct Play doesn’t solve the issue either (ensuring that Transcoding is not happening).
  7. Monitoring the outbound connection on my router (pfSense) shows that only a fraction of the upload speed is being used.

This is driving me nuts, please help.

The good news is that XPlay works fine on both LG TV’s and also plays my 4K content which is great as I’ve not seen any 4K content via Plex server until now.

However, it just goes to show how bad the official Plex player if someone has decided to make an unofficial version. Whilst the unofficial version is good, it is not free. I paid for a Plex pass outright so I wouldn’t have to pay again. Also therr are manhy features missing from XPlex. For example, there is a global setting to turn direct streaming on or off. If you turn direct streaming on which is the default, any files which cannot be directly streamed just fail instead of attempting to transcode. This is not a good idea especially when I have to give technical support to my parents on why something isn’t working.

It seems the players have had a massive oversight in terms of development and there are always updates for the server side. The fundamental function of Plex simply doesn’t work for me and that is really disappointing.
