As indicated in the title, playing a UHD 4k movie rip which contains TrueHD audio and external subtitles (.srt) will force transcoding on my LG OLED55B7A. Conversely, 4k movies with DTS-HD MA audio and external subtitles will direct play as expected, with subtitles correctly displayed.
This is a known issue. If the audio transcodes and you enable subtitles then the video will transcode as well. The B7A does not list TrueHD support in the tech specs.
Here’s a reference post from a Plex employee. The thread is about ASS subtitles, but it applies to all types.
I have the same issue. Just to add; for me it’s both internal and external subtitles (.srt).
Troubleshoot it yesterday. I have a 4K HDR video with TrueHD and DTS-HD MA and an internal SRT subtitle.
TV: LG 49SK8500PLA
Situation 1:
Subtitle: Off
Audio: TrueHD 7.1 (Transcode)
Video: 4K HEVC Main 10 HDR (Direct Stream)
Situation 2:
Subtitle: On - SRT Internal
Audio: TrueHD 7.1 (Transcode)
Video: 4K HEVC Main 10 HDR (Transcode) ; Direct Stream not available
Situation 3:
Subtitle On - SRT Internal
Audio: DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Direct Play)
Video: 4K HEVC Main 10 HDR (Direct Play)
So this results in the choice: either high quality audio without subtitles or DTS audio with subtitles (because transcoding 4K HDR is not a realistic option on my Plex Server).
