LG WebOS says Server is currently unavailable

Server Version#: 1.22.1.4228
Player Version#: 5.11.1

Yesterday I was watching Plex in the same location with my old TV + the Roku stick player so I know I can watch Plex in this location. Works still on that TV and on my iPhone. So this is only an issue with the new LG TV and its Plex App on WebOS. TV Model 43UN7300PUF. webOS TV Version: 5.2.1-2521. Everything has been updated and reinstalled. I’ve tried wired and wireless but the WebOS Plex app still can’t connect to my Plex Server. The Netflix app (in HD even!), Amazon Prime app, and YouTube apps on WebOS all work fine, so I’m getting connectivity to the TV.
I’ve updated my router DNS to 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4. I made sure IP6 is disabled. I went through every similar post in this forum to try applicable solutions and nothing has worked.
Since it can’t connect to the server, I can’t even look at logs to debug.
Lastly, my parents can connect with their Sony TV app to my Plex still (which is also remote network), so not a general issue.
Please help me debug this. I bought this TV so I would have Plex build it with an ethernet connection so I might have a chance if playing HD content.
Thanks!

Are your server and TV on the same network/subnet?
Is DNS rebinding allowed for the plex.direct domain (How to Use Secure Server Connections | Plex Support)?
Do they connect to the internet via the same public IP address?
What values are set for Allow Insecure Connections and Prefer Insecure Connections in advanced settings (of the webOS app).
On the server side what value is set for Secure connections?

Logs from the server will still show connection attempts from the TV and could be useful.

Thanks for the fast reply Markus101!

Server and TV are not in the same household, so not in the same network/subnet.
I don’t know what IP address the webOS app is using, as it would be redirected from the Plex.tv server I assume.

App settings: Allow/Prefer Insecure Connections: On same network
Server settings: Secure Connections (Server): Preferred
I’ve tried different combinations of always/required but no difference.

So I just disabled the server VPN from the Plex media server and I was able to get this app to connect. However, this is not a long term solution.
It also doesn’t explain why every other [7] tablet/phone and [4] smart TVs/Rokus also in different networks have had no problem connecting, but only this new TV/webOS Plex app can’t connect with the VPN on.

Are they establishing direct connections or relay connections to the server?

A direct connection would not go over the VPN (unless you’ve configured the server to report the VPN’s outgoing IP and it allows inbound connections), but a relay connection would and could explain why it’s working on other platforms as I’ve found an issue with relay connections in the webOS app.

This is an issue with your newest version of the application. I am having the same issue. When I first bought my LG OLED TV, I spent hours troubleshooting not being able to connect to my local plex server (Synology NAS running plex in a docker) and my only solution was to “leave early access” and this options looks to have been replaced with “sign out” in the user options. Plex access works on every other device in my home (and outside my home).

We need a solution to revert back to the previous version quick. I designed my media system around Plex and this completely breaks it.

+1 on the issue. My brother can not access plex server on his LG oled cx series. An old dumb tv with a ROKU in the other bedroom can. Both TVs accessing plex remotely and on the same network to each other. I hope plex and LG fix it soon. About 30 hours since the error started.

Also having this issue with LG OLED. Worked one day, then dead the next.

Have a similar problem.

The plex app can’t connect to the server, but on the same TV, I can connect via web browser without a problem.

Please fix the app or give us the option of running the old app.

Hi Markus101,
The VPN is for all network traffic from the server (and has been this way for years). Plex only uses the VPN address when I enable Remote Access. The VPN does allow incoming traffic, but the port changes each time connecting.
As I said, all other devices are outside the local network of the Plex Server. I’m still a little unclear on the difference between a direct a relay connection.
Not sure how the other devices would be able to find the Plex Server’s IP address.
Is there a way to manually configure the IP address of the Plex Server? I didn’t see any options on the Remote Access page.

So are you saying that the webOS Plex App is having relay connection issues, but the iOS, Roku, Sony, Vizio TV apps all handle relay connections well?
Is this something Plex can fix?

This support article goes into what relay connections are.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/216766168-accessing-a-server-through-relay/

In network settings you can use Custom server access URLs

We’re working on a fix for the relayed connection issue (not fixed in 5.12.1 that was just released).
