LG WebOS Plex app only works with 1 router

This is annoying and at wits end. It’s rather similar to others having WebOS connectivity issues to one’s server, but this is perplexing (no pun intended)…

Let’s rewind 6 months:
Router: Netgear R6400 that I’ve had for a few years. The issue is WiFi started dropping out for other devices while my TV was hardwired. Playing off my Plex server has been no issue.

Server: Windows 10 latest OS 21H2 and works for all devices be it remote or LAN.

TV: LG 65UH8500 from 2016 (the last SUHD TV that also supported 1080p passive 3D…)

Issue: We were temporarily living with family after selling our house and waiting to close on our new house. Everything worked at the original house, and when we moved in with family, their router was not sufficient (older router with 10/100 switch ports in rear). I hooked up my Netgear in place and then setup their old router as an AP so all their other devices could connect while all my devices could also connect. Win-win.

As I said earlier, my R6400 had wifi drops even after hard-resetting router. Reloaded settings, etc. I swapped in a brand new Asus that those family members bought, and suddenly Plex on ONLY my LG TV I configure this new Asus router to have the same LAN IPv4 addresses thinking my TV had a static IP and maybe only likes that address (idk, acting goofy when going back to auto). No matter what, though, this Asus would not allow, even after just enabling uPnP when I couldn’t figure it out. Now, if I put my Netgear R6400 back in place, it works/connects just fine. I thought
to myself, “Well we’re moving soon so it’s no big deal, I’ll figure it out when we get to the new house if it’s still an issue”.

Fast forward to December. We moved in and of course because we’re moved, and my router still had drops, I buy a NEW Netgear, but different model. Copy all settings to this new AP (I now run Ubiquiti EdgeMax > netgear ProSafe switch > Netgear AP) all ports are opened, all settings set to allow, and every device whether wireless or wired can connect over LAN or remote. However, LG TV still does not connect… For the sake of seeing how dumb I am at troubleshooting, I put the netgear back in place, my old R6400, and it worked… Very puzzling…

Troubleshooting steps I’ve taken:

  • Allow insecure connections like other posts have mentioned both on PMS and LG WebOS app
  • Delete Authorized devices and readded
  • Delete and reset Plex app off of the TV
  • Hard reset my TV after backing up display config
  • WebOS had an update to a newer version after resetting, and that’s because I didn’t enable auto updates on TV, I thought for sure this would be my fix but it wasnt.
  • Setup a temporary Plex server on a spare PC and THIS CONNECTS to my TV but it did not like having 2 plex servers so the connection would work intermittently. If I shut down one plex server, it seemed towork just fine. Note: I only got this to work when utilizing a port other than 32400 (I used 32410) So I set my old server to use that port (thinking maybe it’s only working over remote connection) and this does not work.

I’m thinking my only actual viable solution is to create a new permanent instance of a plex server, but I have so many libraries shared, collections, etc, I just don’t want to have to redo it all just to make my TV work…

Yes, I have an alternative to work on my TV, so I use an Xbox, but the Xbox app is such garbage it’s unusable. It does not matter if I use my Xbox One, or either one of my Xbox One X’s, it’s an awful experience where anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour of playing any content in any format, it studders and then A and V are out of sync. the only fix is to rewind 10 seconds which then seems to resync stuff… that could be a physical server problem as I’m running dual Xeon E5645 CPUs (12c/24t) and have to rely on raw power to transcode anything since I don’t have any Intel GPU or QuickSync…

Yes, I have an Older Roku, but I prefer the builtin apps because DV and/or HDR work best. DV isn’t supported on Xbox One X because my TV has the hardware chip and doesn’t support the newer DV software version.

Anyway, I appreciate all feedback, there may have been additional things I’ve tried, but missed, so if anyone has suggestions, I’m open to whatever. If it is the TLS 1.1 thing and I’m screwed, so be it. The other thing my wife said to do was just replace the TV (yeah i know, permission to upgrade and she knows I don’t cheap out), but I really like the fact this does 3D even though it’s showing its age with poor local dimming, etc.

Instead of copying the network configuration from your old router/setup… have you tried doing a clean setup? I would in particular look into the configuration of the active network components among each other (e.g. avoiding unwanted segmentation by ensuring only the main router assigns local IP addresses…).

In addition it could be worth to check the server / LG TV for old configurations (e.g. dedicated IP assignments, specification of LAN networks…)

When you say

are you referring to other Plex apps which can see your server fine?

PS: that’s quite a wall of text…

I gather from what Tom is suggesting is to arrange your main Router/Gateway and second router as just a switch. I agree with Tom.

Sorry, when i say copied settings, I meant I set up two devices cleanly, but copying settings like DNS, opened ports (for Plex, Xbox, my cameras, etc). Since I used a Netgear fist and then Asus, I don’t think you can just import settings, or at least I never tried. Same with this new Ubiquiti Edge device, just trying to make sure all ports and things are open as they were before.

Only my Ubiquiti Edge device assigns IPs. My Netgear switch has router mode disabled and acts just as a layer 2 switch, just to be as dumb as possible.

For the server, I manually assigned the same exact IP as before, and even the LAN IPs the same, and it didn’t work. I did it so that I didn’t have to reassign all static IPs on devices.

And yes, all I mean is on multiple devices, whether hardwired into my network or wireless, or remotely on my 4G or a friends house, any of my devices access my server NP.
