Plex not updating libraries

Server Version#: Version 4.87.2
Player Version#: Web Player

Since this last update, for some reason Plex is not detecting changes in my libraries and hence is not updating new content unless I do it manually. Before this update, my server would update the libraries almost right away, now this doesn’t happen anymore.

Is this happening to others? How did you solve it?

Are those files on an external or network drive?

My bad, I forgot to specify that. I have the files on external hard drives, it’s not a NAS or anything, just 2 Hard Drives, 15 TB each. The files have always been there, and this was not an issue before.

I know there’s limits when it comes to how many directories an app can monitor/watch for changes on Linux based platforms (which can be changed on the OS level). I haven’t been using Windows for some time – based on a brief Google search it seems there could also be limits to the default number of directories an app can monitor/watch.

Do you have a rough idea how many folders there are inside your library folders (incl. all subfolders)?

Oh wow, just to give you an idea. In one of the external drives, I have 2 main folders, one is for Movies which has around 2168 folders that contain each individual movie and in some cases subtitles. The other folder for TV shos has 50 folders in it, and the only time I use subfolders for each tv show is if they have more than 1 season, otherwise, i just use that one folder.

The other drive is basically the same, 2 main folders, and one of them has around 400 subfolders containing the tv shows which if they have more than 1 season, well they have more subfolders in them, otherwise is the same. I don’t know if this is the problem to be honest. I’ve seen people in reddit with some complex and bigger libraries.

Can you post your server logs?

Sure thing!

Thank you for your help.

Not seeing anything obvious, can you provide the exact path and name of a file that is not being scanned?

I have my content in 2 Hard Drives. The one I’ve been adding content since yesterday, which is when this stopped working is here: W:\Dramas. An example of this would be W:\Dramas\Alice In Borderland. So that drive W is the one I’ve been adding content since yesterday.

DEBUG - Scanner [Plex TV Series]: found cloud match for file 'W:\Dramas\Alice In Borderland\S01E01.mkv': 'Alice in Borderland (2020)'

Plex is seeing and scanning those files.

Might be either a naming issue or marking it as a duplicate.
Alice in Borderland (2020) - S01E01 - Episode 1.mkv instead of just S01E01.mkv

I think he’s triggering all his scans manually. If I understand correctly it’s just not triggering a scan automatically when he adds new media to the drive

Under settings –> Library

What are your choices here? Is it possible you unticked a box by accident somehow?

I tried renaming the files as you suggested and removed them and added them again. But the same thing happens. I don’t think is a naming issue because if it was even when I did the manual scan, Plex wouldn’t update the library if that was the problem, but it does update it when I do it manually.

You’re correct to say the issue is that the automatic scan is not happening anymore, I have to do it manually. The settings in the Library section have been the same since I set this up. I have it to scan my library automatically, The Run a partial scan option has been off since I set this up, however I turned it off today to check if this would fix the issue, but nothing happened. I don’t know if this has something to do with the latest update or something else. I hadn’t installed the latest update up until a couple of days ago, and this was before I started to add files again to my library, so I thought that had something to do with it.

Did you add just W:\ to your Plex library or did you add W:\Dramas\?
It is not recommended to add a “naked” drive letter. Among other reasons, simply because Plex cannot monitor the “Changed-At” date/time stamp on a drive letter, like it can on a folder.

I added the folder, not just the drive (W) irself. If I have a different type of content I create a folder for it and just add that. Adding the letter seems messy and not convenient, and as you say, it might not work well with Plex.

A quick update on this. I don’t know what happened but the library scan is working again as it was before. It once again scans the files immediately after I add them to the source folder. I want to thank every one of you for your assistance on this. You guys are awesome!
