Library path for PMS use name or volume number?

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#:

I am replacing my media storage device (firewire Drobo to thunderbolt Drobo). I have copied all media files from old to new device, in the same structure, and I think I am ready to “flip the switch”. My plan is to boot into safe mode of MacOS High Sierra (10.13.6), change the volume name of the current storage, then change the name of the volume of the new to that of the current one.

Basically, change “PlexMedia” to “PlexMedia00”, and change the new volume to “PlexMedia”. My hope is that all of the applications, including PMS will launch on reboot, and see no issues, like nothing at all is different.

In the web UI for adding and editing Libraries, it shows as “/Volumes/PlexMedia/Movies”, etc. for each library. I am wondering if it will work as I hope, or if I need to dig deeper to change what Plex is looking at (volume number instead of name).

Thanks!

If all you’re doing is moving media (not OS, apps, etc):

Point your libraries to both new & old locations and scan the libraries. Plex will pick up the new locations as duplicates. Then remove the original location from the libraries & re-scan to remove old location information.

There are some preparation & cleanup steps to the entire process. Make a small test library with a few movies as a test and to get a feel for the procedure.

See this support documentation for the details:

Thanks! That documentation had the answer. It looks like I can treat it as “Upgrading a hard drive” as it calls it.

Still going to do it with my fingers crossed!
