I’d love to see a feature that allowed users to set a maximum upload bandwidth use. For those of us with a lot of myPlex ‘subscribers’ - users we share our libraries with, having many simultaneous users takes up my entire 8 MBPS bandwidth, and thus clogs my download speed b/c requests can’t get back and forth. Setting a max bandwidth usage would enable me or any PMS admin to ‘reserve’ some bandwidth.
You can pretty easily do this with a good router, find your QoS settings.
Thanks Tobias. I have an AirPort Extreme. May I ask where those settings are on it? And can I specify it per application?
Of course airports are the exception. They don’t have a UI for that. What OS is PMS running on?
Ach! 10.8.2
Maybe this helps? http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/7426/bandwidth-shaper-or-bandwidth-controller-app-for-mac-os-x
I had this working great using ipfw. But then realized that it was messing up the transcoder for some reason and was only working for Direct Play. See my post here: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/70919-plex-new-transcoder-running-very-slow-on-fast-mac/
I would like to see a setting in the admin that would be something like "Limit bandwidth to external IPs to X Mbps". What would happen is every time a new user started streaming from a non-internal IP, it would see if their requested bit rate in addition to the current bit rates would exceed the max. If so, it would cut down the highest bit rate users until the max was reached. For example, if it was set to 3 Mbps and we had 2 people streaming at 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps and we had a new user that wanted to stream at 768 Kbps, the 2 Mbps user would get set down to 1.25 Mbps and everyone would be happy.
+1 I really like this idea.
You can also tell your plex users to change THEIR plex client settings (preferences > system > myplex) to use less bandwith. I believe the option is called:
"Quality From Remote Media Servers"
This has options for different speeds to request from YOUR server. The lower option they choose, the less bandwith it pulls from you.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (Settings > Server > Remote Access)
