Limiting Plex remote bandwidth

I’ve recently discovered that Plex will use up my entire upload bandwidth, no matter the size of the video that is being remotely streamed. My ISP is gigabit/30mbps for reference.

Example - I remotely streamed, direct play, a 5 mbps bandwidth video (seen via Tautulli), and I watched my routers traffic increase to 30 mbps (my full upload limit) for 30 seconds, then back down to under 5 mbps. This happened with any other videos as well.

Plex has no business using up that much upload, so I want to limit it. I tried QoS, but no matter what QoS setting I use on my router, Plex uses that max anyway. Still causing massive lag spikes in online games.

So here’s my question. I saw that Plex Pass has a feature for limiting remote bandwidth. What happens if I buy that pass, and set that internet upload speed to 10 mbps for example? Will my router see a spike to 10 mbps for 30 seconds, and that’s it?

What about the limit remote stream bitrate option? Does setting that to 4 mbps 720p for example, mean it will only use 4 mbps this time, or still the full amount to buffer?

According to the official documentation, it says if you set the internet upload speed, plex will operate within that bound.

Per remote stream bitrate is a quality setting, the network usage can exceed it when filling the clients buffer.

If your plex server is on it’s own machine it shouldn’t be too hard to set QOS upload limits for that machine on your router. If the plex server is on the same machine you game on, it gets allot more difficult to classify Plex traffic with most routers.

Check in your router, it must have an option where you can limit the bandwidth by IP
