Linking (original) gmail login to Google OAuth2

Hi,

May I suggest an enhancement that will allow users to log into Plex using both their Plex credentials (google email address / password) as well as Google OAuth2 when the email is the same.

If there is 2FA this would be requested using either method. It is convenient – for reference, sites such as Linkedin, twitter and github allow this functionality.

You can already link your plex account with your Google account, then login to Plex using your Google creds.

What would be different with your suggestion?

Doesn’t work for me. I go to app.plex.tv, choose Continue with Google. I popup comes up and I select my Gmail account. The window closes and the button keep looping (see gif below).

Nothing happens.

Tried it on Firefox and Chrome.

Check for add-ins, firewalls, or other “internet filters” blocking things in your browser.

As far as I can see, you haven’t linked your plex account with your Google account yet. If you sign in with your Google creds at this time, you are creating a new plex account, instead of signing in to your existing one.
Follow the link I gave above.

In my original reply I followed the part of the document that stated that if the account is the same one would click on the Google OAuth2 link and the connection happens automatically.

I then followed your second suggestion, i.e. logging into plex with my Plex credentials and then choosing the link option (this is filed under those scenarios when the plex email and the google email are not the same).

I created a video to explain my experience: https://youtu.be/0yzyPFkxVTI.

I want to add that I used Firefox without any extensions and with no special firewall blocks.

I authenticate with google but get the wait animation.

Thanks

It seems I cannot help you further with this.

I just tried this…emails are different for my Plex account and the Google account that I try to link. Chrome just spins on the Plex page after I tell it to “Continue with Google”

I tried in an incognito window and this time after I logged into Google and it tried to connect, it came back with a prompt that I need to reset my password (I’m assuming Plex password) and won’t let me proceed.

I can’t reset my password right now, but maybe this is the prompt that isn’t showing up in your browser when trying?

I can log in traditionally. If it turns out that this is more common than it would eventually be fixed.

I have a password manager and my google password is one of those ultra complex, ultra long ones - but OAuth does not share google’s password. Plex is the only place that supports this action that does not work for me.

I’m just saying that I experience the spinning wheel like you when trying to link them, but when I tried in an incognito window it gave an error vs just spinning.

Nothing related to your Google password length as mine is extremely long as well, maybe you need to reset your Plex specific account password is my point. Try in an incognito window and see if you get the same error message vs a spinning wheel.

I tried incognito mode as well but I kept getting the spinning circle.

Linking both would be more convenient and I don’t want to risk breaking anything that is already working :grimacing:

I was able to link my Plex account to my google account with no issues. I would try a chromium-based browser like Chrome or Edge instead of firefox.

It worked with a Chromium browser
