(version and client aren’t relevant to my question)
Hey my Plex friends, i have a super unique idea and i’m wondering if it can be done. let me set the stage and i’ll ask my question.
Server Alpha: Primary NAS unit with a GPU for transcoding and a decent cpu. been using this as my primary plex sever for about 2 years with no issues. My upload is unfortunately only 20mbps.
Server Beta: my new (primarily backup clone) of data from server Alpha that will be at a remote site. this thing is ancient and CANNOT transcode. it’s just a boring nas haha. upload will also be about 20mbps.
so here’s my question, is there a way to have BOTH servers be seen as one to a remote client? and my second question, is if the answer is yes, is there a way to have server beta ONLY do direct play? i would think there would need to be some sort of load balancer to dictate which client connects to which server. A sort of If=Than statement. If transcoding is needed, then server alpha. If not, try server beta .
and if they have to appear as separate servers, is there a way to have all the metadata be transferred from server alpha to beta automatically? things like credits, intro stuff or currently playing information? this way my main server can do all the heavy lifting and server beta is just a support/backup server
I only have a handful of friends and family who use my plex so its RARE to have more than 2 remote streams at once (and i’ve just limited upload speeds to 10mpbs per client to two can use it without any issues).
anyways, i’m curious if what you think. it’s not a hill i’ll die on if it cannot be done. just thought i’d see if some crazy homelabber figured it out!
