what are the minimum specs required to run a plex server on linux? looking at Raspberry Pi to run the server and want to make sure i get enough memory - can’t find the specs required on the server download page. thanks!
It really depends on what you want it to do.
On the other hand here is what I use:
Raspberry Pi 4B Running Index of /raspios_lite_arm64/images/raspios_lite_arm64-2021-11-08 (and fully updating it), Yes It’s now a fully “stable” release (Debian 11/Bullseye))
With 4GB ram (I’ve never seen it come close to using even half that using the lite version (headless/no desktop) running Plex and some other stuff)
I’m using a cheap Kingston 240GB A400 SSD boot/system drive. I HIGHLY Recommend this (or other similar SSD) over the regular SD Card generally promoted, as it is much more reliable/durable and faster than the SD. Don’t spend any more money for a faster SSD as the Pi can’t even keep up with the speed of this SSD Raspberry Pi 4 specs and benchmarks — The MagPi magazine (even with an UASP adapter, but make sure you use one)
A solid power supply is a Absolute Must, the “Official Raspberry Pi 4 type-c power supply” works well as do some others do, but many don’t.
A good cooling system is a must if you overclock the PI as most do. I use the “Ice Tower” as it is nearly silent(especially on 3.3v and still runs cool) but to get it to actually work I had to slightly bend the mounting brackets so it would work on the Pi 4.
Next you need storage, I’m using a Toshiba X300 8TB with UASP adapter (many, many other ways to go…)
With this setup I can play almost anything as long as Plex doesn’t have to transcode code it. As of now and I’ve not seen any indication that Plex plans to implement Hardware transcoding for the Pi 4. (Emby DOES NOW, I’m told Jellyfin does too)
I do use Plex to record OTA (Over The Air from antenna), but there are many long time problems with this and live TV…
I’d advise spending some time trying out the unpaid versions of Plex, Emby, (even Jellyfin) and if you think they may meet your need try a one-month trial of the premium version to make sure it’s worth it.
AND FOR SURE, you can do more with better hardware…
…what works for you… …enough typing for now.
what do i want it to do? stream videos to a fire tv stick at 1080p hopefully - one stream total - none of the other things you mentioned are needed. my question is what are the minimum specs for doing this. The Raspberry Pi i am looking at runs at 1GHong Kong and has 512m of ram and yes an SSD drive for storage - my question relates to the requirements of Plex which i cannot find anywhere. thanks
Sorry that didn’t help you but thought it might help some…
…to answer your question:
HTH.
2 gigs of memory - thanks!
