Live TV and chromecast

I was excited to see Live TV come to android devices. However before I buy a tuner I would like to know what this means:

Flinging or casting playback to another Plex app is not currently supported.

Does this mean I cannot chromecast live TV? I guess the wording is throwing me off.

Thanks!

Correct. I just tested with the latest version of Plex for Android.

I was casting to ChromeCast with a recorded video, but when I switched to LiveTV, it made me disconnect from ChromeCast and stated it does not support LiveTV on a remote player.

Thanks for the response, that bums me out. We almost exclusively use chromecast for Plex.

@borderjs - you area really hamstringing yourself using a chromecast for everything - the server load will be immense!

@teshiburu - You think so? I haven’t really noticed any issues. We used to use the app on the TV or used DLNA from a WD TV. Sometimes PS3 app. What would cause the server load? Transcoding maybe? It probably helps that I am running the plex server on a spare PC that is rather beefy.

Great thing is I can give my 4 y/o my phone and she can open plex go to her profile and pick her own show and play it. They can use touch screens much easier than remotes nowadays it seems.

I thought about building a rasplex since I have extra raspberry Pis sitting around. Doesn’t help with my live tv desires, however. I am always open to other options.

We were exclusively using Chromecasts with Plex until I hooked up an HDHomerun Connect for Live OTA TV. Luckily I stumbled over the fact that both HDHomerun and Plex have native apps that run on the Amazon FireTV stick, and that solution works great. There’s no reasonable way to cast to it (they do compete, after all) but there’s also no need to, and my wife likes having a “normal” remote instead of using her iPad.

Last night I watched some live tv using a nexus 6 (android), then turned on the cast feature and continued to watch on a monitor via a chromecast. I was in the mountains using some kind of satellite for the internet, my server is some 50 miles away in denver. The tuner is an older Hauppauge HVR-2250. It works, at least for android, I am impressed.

So interesting that you have the ability to chromecast live TV while others
don’t? Anyone else able to chrome cast live TV on Android?

Casting live doesn’t work for me either (via Android app). Of course this isn’t surprising since it plainly states that it isn’t supported. We’ve used chromecast (3 of them) exclusively for the past few years now and have been very pleased.

Here’s what I’d like to know: Is there a chance that live casting will be supported in the future? I’m wondering if it’s in the works or if it’s just a total non-started due to technical barriers. Either way, I doubt I will replace all three chromecasts. But if live casting will definitely never happen, then I could see buying a separate device just for the living room or something. If live casting has promise, I think I’ll wait it out…

One thing to note, on Android casting the screen through the OS does work, but casting through the Plex app does not. Casting the screen is okay as a one-off work around, but I wouldn’t consider it a solution. I’d much prefer to wait for the program to download entirely than to cast the screen.

Thanks for the casting the screen tip. That may have to work for now, I too am not really interested in buying another device.

I would like to know the future about chromecast live tv as well.

Can’t speak for Plex, but since the server can transcode the stream to a compatible format/standard… I don’t see why not. Might or might not require a powerful server though.
