Live TV as a Slingbox replacement?

So now that Live TV has been released, I’m curious if it would work as a Slingbox replacement? I currently have a SB setup at my parent’s house in the US and use the iOS / Roku apps to watch US TV when needed. However, I’m trying to simplify as the SB app for Roku isn’t the easiest (need to initiate from iPhone first) and there’s no control functionality whatsoever within the app (again, need to use the phone).

I know the gist of Live TV and the requirements for hardware. But I’m thinking, would Live TV work with something like an HDHomeRun Prime that’s CableCard compatible, with all of the paid for channels? From there, hook the HDHomeRun into a Plex Server that I can setup at my mom’s, then use the Live TV functionality to connect into it from there? I’m not sure if anyone has this setup yet, but don’t want to shell out for the HDHomeRun if it’s going to give me close to 1:1 functionality as the SB today.

I think that is technically correct, however from what I have been reading about the HomeRuns, the problem is going to be getting the cable card.
It seems the cable companies are very stingy with them.

Also, all the DRMed channels will not be available to you on Plex Live TV (Such as CNN, History Channel, etc…)
Sling box is much better.

I have a HDHR Prime and is to say the least VERY disappointing. Can’t watch or record most all the channels I like.

I have always thought Plex should create SlingBox interface… Add DVR to that and you would have something very sweet,

@jjrjr1, doesn’t the cable card give you all those channels?

All DRMed channels are unavailable on the HDHR Prime using Plex DVR.
Even the Silicon Dust App won’t play them.
I understand if you use a Tivo you can watch them.
Also Windows Media Center will play and record them.
But getting Media Center on Win 10 is not officially available…

Official? No. Available? Yes (some fiddling required - but not too bad):

There seems to be an entire sub-set of humanity dedicated to this endeavour:

^^ probably the ‘Go-To’ forum for related Windows Media Center on Windows 10 questions, tips, tricks, etc.

Whenever people want something bad enough - other people will provide the means to make it happen.

Cable Card give you access to the channels but some channels are protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management). Channels marked as DRM can’t be used by Plex currently. However the Silicon Dust “green apps” will let you view them as well as a couple of other programs (Win 7 Media Player, etc).

Thanks @cayars for the clarification.

No matter what you do, eventually and inevitably, your friendly cable company will have your legs pinned back on the headboard driving you to St. Louey with their DRM - then light up a Lucy Strike and stick their hand out for more of your money.

The only way to teach them a lesson is to open the window and toss their stuff into the yard - then tell them to come and get it.

Many people have been paying for TV for so long they really think there’s no other way to see any of it, but there is. The method is usually altering your DNA as it passes through your body on the way to your next door neighbor’s antenna. No, not everything you’re used to watching now will be available over that antenna your neighbor is using, but a whole lot of it is. The bits that don’t come in via the airwaves can be easily replaced by:

  1. waiting a season when it becomes available on Netflix or Amazon Prime
  2. you can purchase the current season of a show you can’t live without for way less than you’re paying cable to abuse your nether regions.
  3. you can stop wondering why FileBot is the #1 Plex Companion - have you seen some of these file names that won’t work? (I’ll let you think about that one for a while).

Right about here is where Sport-Heads say they can’t live without the stuff.
Right about here is where I say there’s more Sports than you can watch on Broadcast TV - so how much stuff that you can’t watch all of do you need?

Life without cable is different - but it’s not that different. When you can send 3 of your children to medical school on what you were paying cable, the possibilities of eventual retirement (and free Doctor Visits) becomes immediately apparent.
