I’m considering setting up Plex Live and DVR with HDHomerun and plexpass. There are 2 versions of the HDhomerun. One that gets OTA stuff with an antenna and another that works with cable TV.
Can the Cable version record any content that I’m currently subscribed to with my cable company?
Will it work with my existing cable box or do I have to get a cable card?
Can I watch any channels live at a remote location TV with the plex app on it?

Depends on whether the channel actually is encrypted or not. This is differs by cable operator and region, unfortunately so there is no way to tell you which channels will work in Plex.

You need a cable card AFAIK, and a version of the HDHomeruin with a cable card slot.
Plex cannot use your existing set-top box in any way.

Yes, as long as your server
a) has a strong enough cpu to perform real-time video transcoding
b) the remote access to your plex server is functional (test this before everything else - no Plex Pass needed for this)
(Keep in mind that currently only the Plex server admin/owner account is able to watch live tv. DVR recordings though can be watched by all users, if the library is shared with them.)

That would be a real issue if I bought the HDHomerun Prime and rented a cablecard but my cable provider Verizon Fios encrypts all my channels. I’m not interested recording any pay channels just the regular HD channels. Any way to check that before making the investment?
I have just bought a hd homerun connect, I am really frustrated with plex. i have got it all setup and it is working as intended. but for live tv i cannot find a way to just pick a channel i want to watch. the free hdhomerun windows app does this.
i understand that plex wants me to pick via content and not channel. But this is a basic feature, I have kids and i just want to chuck on the kids tv channel and leave it.
If i am wrong and there is a way to just get a list of channels to pick from, someone please let me in on where the setting is.
