Live TV Audio Losing Sync

I recently purchased a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD tuner, and have set it up on my Windows10 machine along with my Plex server (also on Win10).

I am based in Ireland, so my broadcasting is from Saorview (which I may add is terrible but thats for another day).

Whenever I am watching Live TV on my NvidiaSheild, after about 10-15 minutes the sound goes out of sync by at least 5 seconds on occasions. Setting the playback option to convert instantly resolves it, however I have to manually set this each time.

It seems as though DirectPlay is just not working correctly on my NVIDIA Shield for Live TV. Recordings are not affected and audio is never lost on recordings.

The reason I say it only happens on SHIELD is because this is happening on my 2 NVIDIA Shield devices, however the issue does not happen on FireTV devices or on iOS to my knowledge. WHen watching back, the player shows as Exo Player.

Has anyone else had any issues with this? The only points I can add is that when playback begins PLEX buffers at the beginning very briefly which may be adding to the issue of losing audio.

All my devices are up to date, both OS and Plex apps, and the media server is up to date based on the Public builds. Happy to provide logs if someone can guide me on that and if it helps find a solution

Are you on the most recent beta? I think it’s a known issue it’s happening for me as well. If you disable audio pass through I think that’s fixing it but I’m not quite sure yet.

I was originally on the BETA but reverted back to the public build following a fix for MKV/Dolby playback.

I am testing out playback now with Passthrough disabled to see if that helps. Sadly it disables Atmos etc but if it works at least we know the cause of the issue

@JasonsPlex , great catch.

It looks like enabling Passthrough is causing the audio to slowly go out of sync.

I have disabled it for now, but a fix would be great from Plex, as it loses the ability to playback DTS/DD+/TrueHD etc.

Confirming this issue is on the current stable release on NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019).

Do you still see the issue on the Beta?

Yep. The only reason why people are seeing this now is because the latest beta ask you to enable it again

OK, it looks like disabling Passthrough didn’t work after watching for 20+ minutes.

I even downgraded back to v8.30.2.31202 after seeing almost everywhere it was known as the best release. That’s definitely true for file playback, but audio sync issues is still happening even on older versions.

It looks like this issue has been around for months and months.

I’ve never had that issue in the past. I wonder if it’s tied to 1080i or 1080p or something like that or if it was the recent beta update for the server? Mine just started happening in a couple days ago.

Webview for Android was also updated a couple days ago which I’ve seen cause issues in the past.

I only very recently bought the Hauppauge device so its hard to tell if its just rotten luck for me.

Here in Ireland, we have a very poor selection of stations. Only 2 are HD and the other 5-6 watchable stations are in SD :man_facepalming:

All channels are losing sync, regardless of format sadly.

It seems to only be related to Direct Play aswell.

Once I watch on a FireTV, it has to transcode due to compatibility however it then stays in sync perfectly.

It’s weird I turned off audio pass-through and I’ve been watching TV for about an hour now with no issues. A family member thinks it’s when you use a channel from the favorites folder. But that doesn’t make any sense to me.

Not that its anywhere near a solution, but I decided to set my VPN app to use the VPN on the Plex app. Now my SHIELD thinks its accessing the Plex Server remotely.

While it still shows as Direct Play, the Playback Settings are showing it is converting to 1080p HD. I now have zero audio sync issues.

A horrid work around but it fixes the issue without having to make any changes that causes issues elsewhere.

Is 720p running just fine? Without your work around?

Unfortunately we only have 2 HD channels here, and both broadcast in 1080i.

The rest are broadcasting at 576i.

I know what your thinking, Ireland is so far ahead with its technology :joy:

Completely removing my overall exaggerated solution.

Audio Sync Issues are still occurring. Most notably on non-HD broadcast channels.

How on earth do I get Plex’s attention to resolve this :frowning: !!

So I re-enabled the HDMI pass-through as I’m using a surround sound on another TV. Even on 720P it does go out of sync sometimes after an extended time of watching. But for me it’s not too often. The fix is just Rewind by 10 seconds and it gets everything back in sync.

I decided to return my Hauppauge and buy a vBox that is sold over here.

The vBox seems to do the transcoding so I had hopes it would help with the audio syncing issue.

So far so good, I’ll report back after a few days but I’m hopeful.
