Lip sync on SHIELD Pro 2019

Server Version#: Ubuntu, latest version as of post
Player Version#: SHIELD Pro 2019, latest version as of post

I’m seeing a small lip sync problem (audio ahead of video) on the Android TV app for NVIDIA SHIELD Pro 2019, direct playing 4K HDR movies
with HD audio.

If I watch the same files using the Kodi app and the lip sync is perfect.

The issue persists through re-installation of Plex and factory reset of the SHIELD (as does consistently perfect lip sync for the same files using Kodi).

I verified the files are direct playing. How could the Plex app be introducing lip sync?

There are also lip sync issues with the Apple TV 4K client. Similarly, if I play the same files using Infuse - no issues whatsoever. Therefore if can’t be my receiver or environment, since other software on the same devices is fine.

Hoping this gets noticed by one of the developers.

Unfortunately, I find lip sync such a distraction, I’ll be avoiding the Plex clients on both Apple TV 4K and the SHIELD.

Just to add that I’ve now returned the SHIELD. The Plex client was one of the big draws for me (I can use Kodi on other devices), but the lip sync issues meant I didn’t want to use it - and it’s hardly cheap.

I assume from the lack of response it’s not a common problem and something about my setup, which, for the record, was a Denon 3500 AVR and Sony AF9 OLED. Again to reiterate though, all my other devices/apps have perfect lip sync (except the Plex client on Apple TV). So I’d assume if specific to my setup it’s on the software side; perhaps some interaction between these plex clients and my Ubuntu Plex server.

Anyway - not an issue for me anymore (happy to use Infuse on the ATV) and hopefully this doesn’t effect anyone else in anycase.

I am having an audio Sync issue as well with my Shield 2019 pro in Plex. We’re you on hotfix 4, or official release software for the Shield? Also, were you using audio passthrough? Kodi seems to pass the audio normally for me so I’m not sure if it’s related to the hotfix or Plex.

Don’t have the SHIELD anymore but I definitely had the issue before applying the hot fix (and after). I would have been using audio passthrough yes (much of my media has Dolby Trued HD Atmos and DTS-X).

if you have a audio sync issue where if you stop playing the video and then start playing it again, and now its playing normally with no issue, then this issue has been reported to the devs already

Mine seems to only affect videos with 5.1 aac, and TRUEHD audio tracks. Some of my files have multiple tracks and the regular ac3 works fine. Very strange.

I remember it was a Dolby True HD movie that I
noticed the poor lip sync.

I don’t recall if I tried stopping and replaying.

I also saw this problem. Do you have a link to the topic here? thx

For me the sync does not correct itself with a stop and start. Ac3 files are completely in sync with video, but aac and TRUEHD Dolby are the ones that have issue. However if the same files are played on Plex for Kodi, the lip sync is perfect. I have tried going back a few months app version, but so far they all have the same outcome. Could it possibly be a Plex server issue?

i dont sorry it was directly

the more people complaining about the audio video out of sync issue the better tho.

the issue isnt occuring in the old player so i have been using that for the last week

it *possibly only effects systems using passthrough on the new player

Great to see some more people reporting this. For the record, now I’ve thought about it more, I’m certain it wasn’t rectified by pausing/replaying on the Nvidia Shield.

Yes, that seems to be the case. I also have the Shield 19 Pro with AV receiver in passthrough.

Yes I can confirm that. Generally, Kodi has a “better” form of passthrough.

EAC3 7.1 worked for a long time only via Kodi (thanks for finally fixing it). Synchronization is better with Kodi. I can see that on my HD audio extractor. It needs the original refresh rate. If I watch a 24p video on 60p, there are always dropouts. At Plex every few minutes, at Kodi once in the film. Now here this problem with the synchronization after you continue the video.

On my thread you can see that despite passthrough, plex and the shield still do something with the sound. Kodi seems to ignore all of this, which may make fewer problems?

the video has to be Stopped and played again, not paused. pausing it will just keep it out of sync

In that case no - I’m certain this did not fix it. I recall stopping and started multiple times (within the same Plex session) when exploring the issue.

if you turn OFF the new player in the plex app settings, how is the lip sync?

I didn’t help switching to the old player. The root cause somehow seemed to be having my Caavo control center running between the shield and my AVR. For some reason certain formats played through Plex caused a delay, but not in Kodi. When I removed the Caavo, the audio sync issues were all solved. Super strange but at least I figured it out and can use Plex again without driving myself crazy.

I don’t recall. As mentioned above, I returned the SHIELD because of this.

Disabling the new player helps with my lip sync issues on my shield

The frustrating thing is every time the Plex client updates on my shield the new player is enabled again
