Live TV for friends?

It was never meant to be allowed. It’s clearly stated in our support documents 1 and 2 that sharing LiveTV was meant only for Plex Home members.

But to backtrack on a feature like this is pretty uncool, and I don’t understand why you would do it.
It not backtracking. It’s fixing a bug.

How did a “bug” that allows you to share Live TV with friends get a GUI and functionality to go with it?

Because the GUI and function are there to allow sharing with Plex Home members. A check was missed for when that setting should be shown.

Are you able to give a reason for why only going to be shared with Plex Home users and not friends?

I don’t believe the original release of 1.11 had this functionality which means someone must have added it later.

I am quite disappointed that this feature is getting removed. Let’s be transparent here and call it what it is, a feature. This “bug” is far from something causing errors, flaws, failures or faults. This “bug” is granting functionality which makes it a feature.

Right. Can you explain why?

I do not have any info on this. It was a decision made by the bosses.

The original release allowed sharing with Plex Home members.

Any unintended behavior, regardless if its a good or bad thing is a bug. As mentioned earlier and stated in our support articles, this was never the intended behavior.

Can you get one of the bosses to answer the question? I think it is fair to know why functionality was added and then removed (and why it needs to be removed).

1.11 had the ability to share with Plex Home members but the future versions added the ability to share with friends. How is it a “bug” or how was a check missed where it wasn’t possible at first but then became possible later unintentionally?

It was a business decision. Just like why any feature works the way they do or why certain things are Plex Pass only features. These are decisions made as part of what Plex is. We understand that being allowed something, then not, is disappointing.

I don’t know the details on how this got exposed, but it was unintentional.

While this XKCD (https://xkcd.com/1172/) is amusing, in this case this was added functionality that I’m sure you and your team understands was desired by users. If not, you do now. So can you help us to understand why this desired feature is being taken away from us? This is awfully opaque.

Plex understands that this feature has been requested. At this time, that is not the way it has been decided that this feature should work. That may change in the future, but it is this way for now.

So can you help us to understand why this desired feature is being taken away from us? This is awfully opaque.

By this logic, we would never be able to fix anything that may be favorable to a user, which is not practical. Again, we are not taking away a feature. You should never have had this ability in the first place, we are just fixing a mistake. If this was an actual delivered feature, then I agree that we would need to provide a stronger justification, but that was not the case here.

I would imagine it has to do with the Aereo decision a few years ago. Although if that’s the case, I’d think sharing DVR’d content would also be taboo. Don’t know. Just my inkling.

I think it’s really impractical to say this wasn’t a feature, whether it was intentional or not. I understand it was a bug that this feature was exposed. But it’s still a feature you are now removing from users.

Aereo - Wikipedia

I wish that if it was for a legal reason Plex would just come out and say it instead of these vague responses we are getting with no actual answers.

A statement around the decision on why a feature was removed would be greatly appreciated.

If a feature needs to be removed for a good reason, there is no user that will argue with that removal. When a feature is removed and the user is told, “I do not have any info on this. It was a decision made by the bosses.”, then there is a lot of room for confusion and frustration. If you can’t tell, users are currently confused and frustrated with the tiptoeing around the actual reason for the feature removal.

The feature was never intended to be released for any users other than Home Users. The fact that someone found a bug that allows access to Live TV for Friends, is just that a bug that will be fixed in the future. This was already stated by @“MovieFan.Plex”. The feature itself is not being removed only the bug allowing “Friends” to be configured for Live TV access.

Plex Media Server 1.12.0.4829 comes with Plex Web 3.37.2. I’ll upgrade in a couple of hours but I got the feeling that the feature (user side)/bug (developer side) has been removed/fixed.

Well that sucks… emby is starting to look better and better these days with everything going on here in the Plex world :frowning:

I can confirm that the option has now been removed with Plex Media Server 1.12.0.4829.

This is really disappointing to see. Plex better include it in their patch notes and not try to hide it.

It’s been super sad to see how poor the responses have been from @“MovieFan.Plex” on this.

I also can confirm that sharing LiveTV with friends has been removed. To say that I am bummed is an understatement.

Really regretting my Lifetime PlexPass purchase after this type of interaction with the Plex Team.

I agree sk8boy, plex is so far behind its competitors, no grid guide, awful dvr that half the time just simply doesn’t work and now they are removing features and not giving a reason. Glad i only bought a year, probably gonna make the switch to emby since they have a more complete product that actually functions. Use to love plex but they have gone down hill.
