Live TV - no audio on most channels

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1488
Player Version#: Plex Media Player 1.16.3.1402, Chrome 76.0.3809.100 or

I have a Hauppauge WinTV quad tuner installed in a Windows 10 Pro box that’s my dedicated Plex server. I have it connected to a Mohu Curve 50 amplified antenna. Went through setup, etc., and can get most of the channels I need (still working on antenna placement). When playing some live channels through either the PMP or Chrome, I get perfect video but no audio. The commercials play audio just fine but the main shows do not. After some testing, here are my results:

  • The audio is defaulted to the Spanish audio.
  • When using PMP or the “Plex server” URL (127.0.0.1) in Chrome, changing it to the AC-3 5.1 English track does nothing.
  • When using the “Plex client” URL in Chrome (app.plex.tv/desktop), changing it to the AC-3 5.1 English track makes the screen go black.
  • When using my phone (Pixel 3 XL) the audio plays perfectly.
  • If I record one of the shows to where the audio doesn’t play during a live broadcast, the audio still doesn’t play. However, if I change to the English audio track, the audio switches like it’s supposed to, and plays fine.

Is there any sort of workaround until this is fixed?

I did some additional testing and found the latest version of Plex Media Player has this issue as well. No audio during live TV broadcasts. I was hoping to cut the cord before football season started, but obviously can’t until this is fixed.

I edited my original post with my findings. Assuming others have this issue? If so, is there a workaround?

Hey @fixedwing71 we have the same Hauppauge tuner in our lab and we’re going to attempt to reproduce. In the mean time can you generate server logs after you’ve tuned to a channel with no audio and send them to me?

Hi cire12, here you go. Logs attached! Please let me know if you need anything else from me to assist with troubleshooting.

Thanks for that, can you send me the xml for a problematic recording?

Also, while we’re at it, let’s grab the xml from a live tv session that’s exhibiting the behavior. Especially if you have one that tunes to no audio (grab xml) and then try and toggle it to english where the screen goes black and we’ll grab the xml again.

To grab xml information for live sessions go to the following URL on the server

How to find your token:

Hi, thankfully it’s not the recordings that have this problem… if I record a show that doesn’t play audio during the live broadcast, the sound plays fine during recorded playback. I’ll get those items you requested shortly. Thank you!!

Sorry for the delay in replying… we had a house-full of people over the weekend and things have just returned to normal. I fired up PMP a few minutes ago and did NOT have an audio problem! I shut down/restarted PMP and tuned to the two shows I was able to replicate the issue on (“Days of our Lives” and “Michael and Sara”) and both played the audio with no issues.

Dumbfounded, I restarted my computer completely and tried again with the shows I listed above… audio played fine. I did update PMS to the latest version over the weekend ( 1.16.5.1554). Would any of the items listed in the release notes have corrected my issue? I’m happy to gather the logs you asked for, but now I have to find a show that I can replicate.

Something worth mentioning… I did notice the first time I tuned to “Days of our Lives” the audio track playing was the English 5.1 track, but the sound output wasn’t 5.1. After rebooting the Plex server, the audio track playing was the stereo/2.0 channel. I chose the 5.1 channel from the drop-down but nothing happened. Not sure if one has anything to do with the other, but I thought I’d mention it.

Looks like my problem is solved… I enabled “Audio passthrough” in the PMP application (didn’t realize I had to go to “TV Mode” to find the settings) and that did the trick! Thanks all! Now if we can only cast live TV from our phones, we’ll be in business.
