I cannot get any Live TV on my Amazon Fire TV. Every time I try to watch a Live show, I get “An Error has occurred, please try again later.” I can watch recorded shows no problem, but the Live TV isn’t working. I tried watching Live on my Android phone, and it worked just fine.
PMS version 1.8.4.4249
WiFi? or wired?
I have the same issue with Live TV on my two gen 1 Fire Boxes that are both wired. I can watch Live TV without any issues on my wired gen 2 Fire Box. Also on PMS 1.8.4.4249 and using a HDHomerun Extend.
I have same issue with 1st gen firetv and homerun prime, didn’t work on 1.8 so I upgraded to 1.9 same problem still occurs.
Same here. Just upgraded to Lifetime for the DVR feature and so far its been a disaster. I have a dedicated PLEX server and working with scheduling or live TV just brings it to its knees. PLEX is not responding…an error has occurred…etc etc.
this is NOT what i was hoping for. I trust PLEX is on this??? I have been using PLEX for around 4 years and its has been flawless. It would seem DVR is not ready for prime time just yet.
I can’t get it to work on any of my FireTV Gen 1’s or Stick Gen 2. I keep getting the error you are getting. It works fine on my PC and phone though.
Same issue on gen 1
For those having issues, please provide your logs from PMS AND from the Fire TV app after recreating the problem. My initial guess is that the app has chosen to direct play a multi-channel audio track instead of transcoding it to stereo. Please say if you have an AVR setup or not.
Attached are the logs from PMS (running 64-bit Ubuntu version, upgrade to 1.9.3 last night) and my FireTV’s plex app (via Network Logging). Fire TV is hooked up to an AVR via HDMI.
The error I see on the Fire TV’s screen is (after several seconds with spinner), “Recording failed – Live TV session”, then a several more seconds later, “An unknown error occurred” (or something close to those messages). If I retry to load the channel after getting these errors, I immediately get an error saying to restart plex.
Also worth noting, this fails on my Nexus Player in a similar manner. The Nexus Player is not hooked up to an AVR.
A note on my logs:
- At about 12:45pm MT today, I tried my Nexus Player and got the error.
- At about 12:50pm MT today, I tried Fire TV gen 1 and got the error.
- At about 1pm MT today, I re-tried Fire TV gen 1, and then got the immediate error saying something about restarting Plex.
Thanks for the logs. I see the failures. Basically PMS was unable to tune to that channel you were trying, so it could not report back what type of video and audio codecs were involved. So when it came time to stream the video, PMS didn’t know who to handle it.
Are you able to record this channel correctly?
Recordings failed on both Fire TV gen 1 (tried around 2:05pm MT) and Nexus Player (tried around 2:00pm MT). I’ve attached the updated PMS logs, but didn’t get the Fire TV app’s updated logs (going to previously-used URL just had 404 error, so maybe I need to re-enable or get different URL). Let me know if you need the Fire TV app’s logs again, and I can grab.
FWIW, I forgot to mention before that Live TV works on my Firestick gen 2. I didn’t try recording, but assume it’ll work. (Firestick is not on AVR.) And this is using an HDHomeRun Connect.
Thanks for looking into this!
Please forgive me if this is the wrong thread, but I’m having an different (but maybe similar) Live TV issue with Fire TV and I was hoping you might be able to help…
When trying to watch Live TV on my Fire TV Stick HD channels load fine but only plays for a few seconds, freeze for a moment, and then resumes. This cycle continues infinitely on all HD channels. Pre-recorded content already on my PMS transcodes and/or direct plays fine and so does most SD live TV channels.
I’m using a HDHomeRun with Cable Card, am able to tune and record the same channels with no problem, and for the short moments when Live TV is playing, the picture quality is clear and without issue.
Live TV in HD works perfectly on all my iOS devices.
PS:
What’s the story on deinterlacing video with Fire Stick? I’ve seen people says that the Fire TV Box can deinterlace on the flyi. Is this true? Do you know if this feature is coming to the Sitck and/or the new 4K “box” coming out later this month?
Thanks!
I had similar issue recently with my Apple TV not working with live tv (my phone, web worked fine). I unchecked PMS hardware acceleration and it worked. I updated to the latest nvidia video drivers and turned Hardware acceleration back on and live tv continued to work.

Unfortunately I’ve never had that feature enabled so unchecking it won’t help. Perhaps I’ll turn it on and see what happens.
Hi, I have this issue on Fire TV 1st gen. Live TV return an error see attachment. I had the same on my android phone but i managed it changing a setting using the android video player instead plex app one. Unfortunately, this option doesn’t exist in the fire tv. Recording is working fine, because at the end, it is just a command that the client sends to the server and the server records. I tried several settings in both, server and client, restarting server and client, install from scratch, manually, the last client update (6.6), but no way.
Any support for this please?
Uh, 6.6 has not been released on the Amazon Appstore yet. Did you grab the APK from the release announcement thread? Those will run on the Fire TV devices, but not well. Any errors you see could be a result of that. Please wait for the release from the store.
First Generation Fire Tv (Fire OS v5.2.6.0)
Fire TV Plex App: 6.5.3.2115.
PMS: 1.9.5.4339 (on a quite beefy Arch Linux machine)
My testing has revealed that–wired or wireless–only lower resolution OTA channels work (with default settings) for streaming live tv with Plex. Manually changing the local video quality to 3 Mbps, 720p HD (Medium) will force a transcoding that allows all of my OTA channels to stream live. Anything higher will cause the Plex app to restart during it’s buffering process on most 1080i channels. High resolution recordings will play just fine at the higher bitrates, however.
The Plex App from Amazon’s app store streams 1080i live tv (from the same PMS) on my new Kindle Fire Tablet (2017) just fine at the higher bitrates (direct play).
EDIT: attached the Fire TV Plex App log for the live tv request (up until the app restarts).
I think bushleaguecritic is on to something. My First Gen FireTV (box) is really struggling with Plex Live TV. I just ordered and installed a brand-new FireTV Stick for my wife’s TV. It seemed to be working fine, so I connected it to the front HDMI port on the AVR that feeds the main TV (which the Gen 1 FireTV is hooked to). Again, it worked great. I re-tried the FireTV Box multiple times after restarting the PMS and the Plex App. I also disconnected the ethernet cable and connected to the wireless AP to rule out a cable problem. Same issue as described by bushleague - SD channels seemed to work OK, but HD channels spun an orange ring and landed back at the main Plex App window or threw some error about failed recordings or such. I have not tried transcoding to see if that duplicates his temporary workaround.
Settings within the Plex App on both the First Gen FireTV and the new FireTV Stick are identical at Max video resolution and “Original” audio.
If logs would help, I can try to provide them. Thanks!

You are right it works but not well (problem with some mkv files). In reality, with any versions also the last release in the Amazon market app have the same behaviour with the live tv.
