So we’ve eagerly anticipated the feature on the Apple TV for months. After using it on my Android TV I had high hopes as it seemed reasonably good on there.
I’ve used it for 20min so far and it’s nothing but a complete joke.
-watching Live TV quits sometimes after a few minutes.
-the Apple TV remote 10sec jumps back and forth don’t work
-NO PROGRAM GUIDE
-CAN’T SCHEDULE RECORDINGS (been available of android Tv and iOS for awhile.)
-can’t see what you’re recording.
-can’t start watching a recording show
Etc etc etc
Effectively apart from tuning to channel it does NOTHING ELSE! No recordings, time shifting barely works, no recording schedule, no program guide, NADA!
WTF???
How is this any different than just installing the HD Homerun channel plugin and just watching live Tv there?
At the same time Plex marketing sends out an email saying the DVR is out of beta and Live TV is now on Apple TV. Yeah strictly speaking they haven’t lied but there is going to be a lot of people signing up for Plex Passes and realizing they’ve been conned.
I have the same issue as pdplexvideo where Live TV on ATV4 constantly stops after a few seconds. The channels app works so I know this can be resolved.
EDIT: plex live tv playback works on iPhone 5s so my issue confined to ATV4
I have problems with Live TV on the Apple TV. For good working I need restart the PMS everytime before it works good.
when I don’t restart PMS evertime, I’m getting buffering and many channels don’t work.
I use the TV Butler, PMS 1.8 latest version
haha, you have to laugh. I can’t believe plex is bringing this out of beta. Along with the crap EPG guide for kiwis the live TV is like the OP said “a Joke”.
The channels app for the apple TV is far superior in all aspects.
I really don’t know what plex were thinking with this. FWIW - my network is all hard-wired cat6 gigabit. Spec’s of my server in my signature.
I can’t play any HD channels properly - if they do play there is no 5.1 audio.
Any channel takes a while to buffer and load (if it does play)
The HD channels show on the apple TV as live TV channels but don’t show in plex web.
EPG - well, as already said, absolutely useless.
its working fine for me, the program guide however is a joke. You need to at least be able to display a tradition TV guide so that you can easily see whats on across all TV channels at all times.
Cant be that hard!

What is your setup in full? Plex server specs, wired or wireless network etc?

Nice to see that Plex don’t seem to care that they have released a button that says Live TV that is as useful as a chocolate fire guard.
Come on plex don’t just ignore your paying customers. Who is beta testing this stuff???
You are.
You do realize that is what Plex Pass is really for, rght?

Well nobody, because this feature was never in the public betas.

Won’t happen… Until … MAYBE? after the courts decide on Rovi Vs Netflix
Stop rattling some stupid court case that is specificaly restricted to just the USA, and not specifically at the intended or wish list EPG we all are referring too. The grid style EPG had been around in print form for a lot longer than digital, it’s been thrown out in all cases as long as the grid style EPG mimics the traditional print version then there is no violation, including in the USA.
In saying that Plex’s way of doing the EPG has grown on me, when (not if I hope) the Apple TV becomes feature equal to Android I’d be pretty happy.
I no longer surf an EPG looking for something to watch or record, I usually find out what I want from Google and search the EPG, much quicker than a traditional grid style EPG. In terms of the programs I watch weekly, mainly news related, I just set those upfront just as easily as one would a grid style EPG.
Incidentally Netflix won that court case and has now created a precedent:
Furthermore, a grid-style EPG is not infringing on Rovi, only some category combination which one could agree, if you wanted to be nit picky, the current Plex guide uses…
Yes, Live TV on Apple TV crashes the Transcoder immediately or a few seconds after starting playback. If there is a recording running at the same time it also crashes. On iPad and iPhone Live TV is not stable, but MUCH more usable. The Apple TV code does not seem to be on the same version.

They still may appeal to the supreme court and Plex resides in the USA so must abide by their laws and regulations.
Rovi bought the rights from TV Guide(The original print you are referring to)… do some research first.
But since you are a lawyer you should offer to Plex your legal representation pro bono regarding this. Perhaps then it will happen sooner, if at all.
One could easily argue, if I was Rovi, that Plex was currently violating patent “US9426509 - Client-server electronic program guide”…but since it is such as grey area not enforceable (by Rovi).
Emby is not violated the patent because they have removed many of the patent infringements such a rich graphics, example below:
This EPG meets the allowable guidelines, oh and they are a company located in the USA
