Live TV

How do I set up my live TV?

If you already use plex DVR then you shouldn’t have to do anything. In the ios or android clients go into the program guide and look at the list of shows playing now. You’ll see a “play” button available and you can start watching it live.

If you haven’t yet set up DVR you’ll need to follow those steps to get plex aware of your tuner and location and provider.

I believe it is only in the android beta app atm

in the iOS app you click browse, program guide, watch now.

Yes, it’s definitely in the released ios app. I’m trying it out from the office as I type this.

So not on Apple TV yet ?

Btw it is crashing my Plex app on both my iPhone and iPad. It is still updating the EPG, maybe this is a related crash!

As a little extra touch, once watching a channel, if you click the 3 lines, you don’t need to close the channel to change to another channel.

@elan It would be nice if one could edit that list as to only show favourite channels, e.g. only HD channels OR at least, resume the list to around the channel that you are currently on, so that you don’t have to scroll through hundreds of channels to go up a channel.

I purchased the plex pass when i saw the new addition of Live TV.

But not it seems i miss understood what they added.

Ive never used Plex DVR, i simply have a PC that I run plex on to watch tv / movies i have on my PC.

I thought Live TV would allow me to stream the channels listed, kind of like watching netflix, but live TV channels instead.

From what i understand i now have to purchase a TV Tuner? - https://www.amazon.ca/AVERMEDIA-H837-AVerTV-Volar-Hybrid/dp/B006PU81QE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496330289&sr=8-1&keywords=AVerTV+Volar+Hybrid

Plug that into my TV? and then Plex Live TV will work?

I’m a little confused. So will this be a PMS update as well? Or will they just bake it into the client/player?
Also do we need an antenna / tuner card if we just want live TV without the DVD function?

I thought they’ve always been quite clear that DVR, and now Live TV, has been done through external tuner support, not streaming. To have these features, if you don’t own one, you will need to purchase a supported tuner for your network or Plex PC for plex to use. Make sure to get one which works where you live and the type of TV you have (over the air, cable, etc).

I suspect it was in the last PMS update but they didn’t enable it until the clients made it out into the world. And, yes, you’ll need some sort of tuner to make it work. It uses the DVR program guide so you need to set up DVR even if you don’t schedule recodings. It doesn’t appear you can do something like ‘watch channel 2-1’. Instead you watch ‘The Silly People Doing Stupid Things’ show so it needs the same program guide info that DVR uses.

Ok, why am I not seeing this in my iOS app? I checked for updates, none available. I have had the DVR set up for months with HDHomerun (working great for recording). But no option in the iOS app to see Live TV. I do not see “Programming guide” in Browse view. What else could I be missing here?

I have everything setup, but the ProgramGuide doesn’t appear in the iOS app anywhere. I’ve deleted and re-added my tuner several times now… deleted and reinstalled the iOS app…

I’ve been using the DVR service on its own for quite some time now, and it worked fine. I even see Program Guide in the Manage section of the web interface…

Live TV or Program Guide in iOS? Nada.

edit: Interesting to note my iOS Plex app hasnt been updated in weeks and it shows as not currently having any updates either. Deleting the app and reinstalling it installs version 4.12.1

Nice! I hadn’t notice that. Have you noticed if there is a way to just tune to a channel initially? Let’s say you want to watch the local news starting in 5 minutes. Seems like you have to find the show playing on that channel now and tune to it rather than just “watch channel 7-1”. Of course with the menu you noticed I suppose it isn’t too onerous to just tune to any live program and then just change to the desired channel.

Perhaps you need to update PMS? I’m on Version 1.7.2.3878.

Any idea if I works for AppleTV yet or just iOS.

Probably just ios now. I think they would have said tvOS or Apple TV if it was there yet.

ahh, thanks @ac4lt

So the final question is that I can just use a USB tuner with an external antenna right?

I ask this because I’m looking at the setup page for the DVR function on my PMS, and it’s looking for a network device.

Wanted to be clear that LiveTV will work with a USB attached device that has an antenna attached to it.

PMS update is the only thing i can think of.

What version of the ios app do you have. Mine is 4.12.1. You can check in the ios app by going to settings and scrolling to the bottom.
