I’ve been using live tv on Plex for years with no issues. Since the new experience was installed, Live TV is not working and if a channel does come on after the wheel spins, it skips and it not watchable. Looking at resource monitor on the NAS, launching a recorded tv shop barely hits the NAS CPU but trying to watch Live TV puts it over 90% as shown in the screen shots. Any help would be appreciated. FYI, this also happens when accessing Plex from an Ipad.
Anyone else not impressed with this new UI? More movement to get where I want to go, very buggy so far. Trying to go through the Live TV menu it got stuck on stations and I had to exit and go back in to make it work.
If you can reliably reproduce this, can you please do the following;
- Confirm server DEBUG logging is enabled, VERBOSE logging is disabled.
SAVE if changes.
- Restart PMS
- Give it two minutes to start and stabilize
- Start a playback which shows the issue
- Let it play for 20 seconds
- Stop the playback
- Download the server logs
- Download your Fire TV logs
- Attach the logs so I may see them.
Ah ok. This is likely due to a somewhat recent change to all apps using the new experience where Live TV is being forced to transcode (see: 2026.13.0 Beta 1 forces transcoding on Live TV - #20 by chris_decker08). This is by design for now due to some instability of Live TV playback. Your host Synology machine is a Synology DS415play — i686 (32-bit Intel Atom) which is pretty weak. The transcoding task is too much for this device.
So your saying, your new app won’t work on my NAS?
For Live TV, unfortunately for the time being, yes. Our player team is working on Live TV improvements and should enable Direct Play/stream again. Unfortunately, again, there is no ETA for when this will happen.
A downgrade like that should have been announced, this is a really big deal for some users.
Is there any easy way to revert back to the previous version? When I’m watching live and try to go back to the guide everything gets screwed up and I’m forced to reset the entire app, every time.
Morning, I purchased a brand new Synology DS223j and it is a little better (CPU goes to 90 so a little lower) but live TV is still unwatchable. Can you provide a list of NAS servers the new app has been tested on?
Meaning what? Constant buffering? Never starts? Error messages?
For comparison, start a live TV session on app.plex.tv and change the quality to Auto or something lower than original quality. Is this a similar experience to what you see on the Fire TV?
Again, we’ll be restoring or allowing direct play/stream again for live TV sessions to the new experience. Which should, hopefully, resolve this issue.
Its buffering and NAS CPU stays at 90% or higher. in browser, switching to 2MBPS, 720 brings it down to 80% and less if any buffering. For reference, playing a movie or recorded tv show, the CPU never goes about 5%. My NAS is old and could use an upgrade so if you can give me a recommendation of a Synology NAS you guys tested with, I’d try it.
Their is an infinite combination of use cases, hardware, media and user’s technical skill so the best you can get is a general recommendation.
Something with an Intel processor that isn’t too old (ix-7xxx) or too new (no bleeding edge)
You could buy a NUC with a N150 processor and point it at the Synology for the media files. Looking at the Synology products there isn’t a lot to recommend for an all in one.
Thank you, what I’m looking for is a list of NAS devices that they tested the new UI on
It’s a shame you had to buy a new server just to get Live TV running. It really shows that the app was rushed and not ready for prime time.
Actually, the shame is that the new Naz did not resolve the issue and they don’t seem to have a list of tested devices.
