Live TV still freezes for certain content on Fire TV 4K

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309 (Sheild)
Player Version#: 7.28.0.15501 (Fire TV 4K)

Seems to vary according to which HD (1080i) UK channel I am watching but today (Sunday 23rd Feb), when watching ITV in HD, the picture freezes typically when an ad break is about to start, or the ad break is about to end… This currently makes Live TV unwatchable.

Also, as a side, enabling or disabling the new player makes no difference, it still reports ExoPlayer v2.

Thanks.

Just to add the same happened when watching countryfile on BBC One HD (uk) when the pre-recorded programme went to a live weather forecast insert. @sa2000 I believe you live in the uk and so you may recognise more technically than me what I am trying to describe both for ITV and BBC above. The sound incidentally continued in both cases.

Thank you.

Actually it’s freezing on every channel I’ve views so far in HD. Usually you need to leave it on the channel for a while. Any response from the Plex dev team would appreciated.

Thanks

This could be because it is switching between interlaced and not interlaced. The development team will be discussing the problem with Amazon to see if there are options available to overcome the original issue with interlaced video

Many thanks @sa2000. Here’s hoping.

There is some progress regarding the actual device issue and it appears that there will be firmware changes

See recent comments starting here This link shows recent progress concerning the device issue https://github.com/amzn/exoplayer-amazon-port/issues/94#issuecomment-591593159

This is positive because it shows Amazon recognise the problem and are trying to address it. In the meantime, any config changes I can do to minimise/avoid these freezes would be helpful. Have a nice day.

We have just released Plex for Android 8.0.0.which introduces an app setting to disable transcoding on Amazon Fire for interlaced video

See release note:

  • [TV] Live TV: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k users can now disable transcode of interlaced streams.

The transcoding was introduced to circumvent the Amazon Fire 4k TV issue covered by this: FTV Stick 4K interlaced video playback leads to media player crash · Issue #94 · amzn/exoplayer-amazon-port · GitHub

Unfortunately whilst the transcoding fixed the problem for some users, other users especially ones with HD Homerun that does its own transcoding had issues with this change. So now we have a user setting to disable this transcoding if it is causing a problem

The transcoding and the related setting is temporary until the underlying issue is fixed by Amazon

Thank you very much for the update @sa2000.
