I’m in Canada, where the concept of OTA or CableCard don’t really exist. I have to use a Set Top Box from my provider for all my TV viewing. Is there any way, or anything in the works, that would allow me to use a capture card of some kind that would accept HDMI or Component from my STB, and use Plex TV to control the STB to change channels etc? Basically, I would love for this feature to replace my Slingbox. I don’t use it often, but if I could do this with Plex it would be fantastic.
Capture cards aren’t supported by Plex DVR and Live TV. We’ve covered this in the Incompatible Devices List post. Sorry, but no current plans to bring support.
These are devices which are designed to “capture” the output and have been used in setups to interface with a set-top device in accordance with an IR Blaster. Unfortunately, because they lack BDA or DVB support, Plex will not be supporting these devices.
Huh? Hauppauge colossus, colossus 2, HDPVR and HD PVR all require BDA support and are not much different then incorporating OTA tuners. These devices are component/HDMI capture devices used for both game capture and tuner STB capture; and they have built in IR flashing (although I prefer IP network controlling). I have used them with NextPVR, MediaPortal and Windows MCE(colossus). They output H264 instead of Mpeg2 stream which I consider a positive especially since it saves on HDD space. only problem with hauppauge is that they have never expanded their IR software to support more than one capture device. So you need to either go with an External USBIR Flasher or go with network IP control. If your STB can network IP control, go with that. A lot of smart home applications prefer it. It is rock solid compared to IR blasting. Plex could easily setup a configuration for this. I would love it as I have both OTA and Spectrum and I travel a lot.
