Live TV with Cable

Maybe this has been covered or answered before. But my current setup is a windows based system hosting media to my various devices on the network. My main device being an nvidia shield tv connected to a projector. This setup has no device for cable tv which is fine because I have pretty much give up on my local provider, it just comes with my internet.
The point of this topic is to ask if a supported device that works with Plex live TV such as the HDhomerun allows Plex to host and decode basic cable channels. I have an old TV card that showes up in plex and works now and then but isn’t supported, it picks up my local providers name but never seems to assign the channels to the wintv card. Is it possible to host up my basic channels on plex with or is there restrictions.

Thanks,
kc8pnd

Plex does not decode anything. It’s all up to the tuner. If you have basic cable, I would suggest the HDHR Prime and getting a cable card from your provider.

kc8pnd,

Don’t go too far down the rabbit hole. You will hours upon hours getting your live tv service to work; spending money on their “supported” tuners then even buy an upgraded beefy PC just to find out that PLEX releases an update that breaks everything. And good luck getting any real support for your problem. I request help this past weekend and still have not gotten so much as a request for my logs. Craziness.

Seems too risky for me now that I read more and more. Don’t think my cable company uses m cards, and I don’t think there are OTA channels available here unless they have to by Canaidan law. I’m going to wait it out, maybe dive back into iptv.
