Yet under Settings → Agents → Local Media Assets (at least some of them) there was (was being about 1/2 hour ago) a settings gear. When I clicked on a that gear a window opened with an option to enter a local music library directory.
Now after reading the above article whose title mentions “Local” Artist and Music Videos yet makes no mention of the Local Media Assets setting screen that 1/2 hour ago had an option to enter a local music library directory.
Does this Local Media Assets music library option actually exist or was it a temporary possibly figment of my imagination. I do actually believe I saw the referenced gear and the window to enter a local music library although no such options seem to exist 1/2 hour later.
The gear reappeared beside Local Media Assets under Plex Movie Legacy and disappeared. Then it appeared beside Local Media Assets under Plex Personal Media and again disappeared.
Is this a real option or not? Why does the gear and window appear and disappear? Could this be related to the presence of the XBMC importers for movies and tv shows?
Always use the hosted web app as it is almost always newer than the local web app on your server
Use the new “Plex Music” metadata agent / scanner for your music library
The path setting is located at Settings - Server - ‘Show Advanced’ - Extras - “Global music videos path”
all settings under Settings - Server - Agents are only for the old, deprecated metadata agents. You can completely ignore them if you use the new agents.
I looked at the HTTP source behind the “hosted web app” reference. I am not a web wizard, I was a professional programmer largely of procedural languages. Clicking on your link appears to have me accessing the app via “app.plex.tv” any attempt to look this up sends me to www.plex.tv and does not explain what app.plex.tv does or is. There appear to be more operands associated with this site in the HTTP source I do not understand.
Second; this does not answer the question whether or not there is a local Music Library option. Maybe this was an old feature that the local web app still randomly displays. If the item actually exists, I have some interest, I have a children’s library and a not for children library (nothing to do with the proverbial “adult” content). Maintaining the children’s music videos separate from the not children music videos is an item of interest to me.
As far as the old agents and the new agents; I have found the XBMC importers allow me to maintain much of the library database in NFO files with my media content meaning my metadata is effectively backed up and furthermore can be edited effectively by me using TMM. Much like I updated the metadata in music files using MusicBrainz Picard in the pre-Plex days I started putting a library together. I am largely now with plex because it runs on a TruNAS server. I have migrated from Kodi through Jellyfin and am now considering Plex. Personally Jellyfin works fine except on the server platform. A single system solution could be preferable. Right now my library can be extracted by Kodi, Jellyfin as well as Plex. Plex offers some advantages – items being allowed in multiple collections – supported via tag entries in my NFO files loaded by XMBC importer agents. I have greater flexibility that Plex supports when dealing with “Extras” items allowing them the benefits of being in multiple collections too. I have build sublibraries in movies for Shorts to expose them mich like the music library for my grand children, How to videos is another category. I even expose general interest featurettes as a sub library of movies while still being able to attach all the content back to the original source feature. Music Videos is a sublibrary of Movies that can be connected to recorded music using collections. TV Shows can be connected to Movies or Music using collections eliminating my use of the metadata link. Movie sets are not scraped because the XBMC importers allow tag entries to be COLLECTION references. And the Movie Sets are not acccepting of User modifications that are not overridden by future scraping. I do not know whether or not this is TMM or Plex or both – however using the tag to collection feature of the XBMC importers, all Collection references can be hardcoded in NFO files and be extracted into the Plex libraries. (this modification moved me away from Kodi and Plex) After reading about Plex wiping out custom modifications with changes to their agents it may be the straw that sends me back to Jellyfin. I spent a great deal of time getting content to be available in a manner my autistic grand son can use. The TMM/XBMC importer agents are a critical part of making Plex viable for me. If this is deprecated technology, I’m glad I have been delaying the purchase of a Plex Pass until I have a library ready to test it. I like the edition feature for the things I am doing with the “sublibraries”. I have a multiple music videos of songs from children’s movies that I believe could fit well into the editions option process.
app.plex.tv is hosting the Plex web app. It is loaded into the memory of your web browser and is then running inside of your browser. i.e. it’s not a “website” but a genuine application.
Plex doesn’t have support for a library full of music videos.
What it does (and what is explained in the links I gave you above) is to add music videos to existing artists and albums within your Plex music library.
