I intend to buy the NVIDIA Shield Pro as my plex client and my server would be on my PC.
Right now, I have the NVIDIA Shield Tube, and it doesn’t work really good… Every 4k movies stops randomly after ~20 min, i’ve read many things about it, tried some solutions but nothing worked, it seems the tube is not enough for 4k movies, too low specs.
I’d like to upgrade it to the Shield Pro to finally enjoy my movies on my brand new TV.
Plex is installed on a SSD Drive and all movies/data/transcoding are on another dedicated external SSD Drive
Fiber connection, around 250 Mb, no WiFi, only ethernet cables
There would be only 1 peripheral at once on the server.
So, shall I buy the Shield Pro with this setup or am I missing something ? I’ve read the Shield Pro is great as client for 4k movies but is my server strong enough ?
Do you run the Beta Plex App on the Shield? (Are Betas Plex Pass only?!)
There were major improvements for the tube and user report that especially 4k is working much better now.
Apart from that, surely the Pro will run smoother than the tube.
Edit: yes betas are Plex Pass only. So you might have to wait a bit until these changes reach the final version.
Edit 2: The latest stable already has this included:
Looks good in general. All wired is the important feature here for 4k Direct Play.
So give the update a try, hopefully this solves your issue and you don’t need to spend another 200 bucks for the pro.
I bought a plex pass and tried the beta .apk but the problem is still the same, movies shutdown a little bit later but this is still a poor experience.
I don’t know if I should wait and see if the dev team manage to optimize Plex Client for the Tube or if I buy the Shield Pro.
My biggest fear is to buy the Shield Pro but still encounter this problem. Raw 4K Movies seems to be pretty tough for hardware.
