New/Old Player crashes (Shield Tube) - 4K HDR (not DV)

@sixones

Hi im using the latest Plex Pass PMS on my DS918+

Using the latest beta on my 2019 Shield TV (Tube). Using the the new player with Hdmi passthrou (Sound), Resolution and Framerate switching on, the Player crashes. This only happens with 4K movies. MKV 4K Bluray Ripps with external srt subtitels and AC3. Player shows direct play.

Same happens when using the old player.

Only way to play is old player and using optical AC3 Passthrou without Framerate switching.
And even using the Player this way the movies stutter some times - not micro stutter because of 60hz. Stutter and freezes, becomes nearly respondable when trying to stopp the movie.

On my other clients everything runs smooth.

Log can be provided

Sorry for my bad english.

Best regards Ekomax

After using the new player to play back some content that crashes, could you grab the logs and share them with me? Information about fetching the logs is available here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

@sixones
could you take a look at the logs. Player is unusable with 4k HDR

best regards

I’m experiencing the same problems with UHD movies on the tube version of Shield. I have the Synology NAS as well, but DS416Play. It’s the players’ fault though, it just crashes. have you tried DV? I think it might happen only with higher bitrate videos, but I’m not completely sure.

@milankoko
My TV can only output HDR

hope @sixones knows whats going on

me too, but the lack of communication on this issue worries me. which tv do you have?

also, i think the problem is in both the old and the new player and related to high bitrate UHD videos on the Tube Shield. I haven’t found any posts mentioning the problem on the 3gb version. I can also play lower bitrate UHD movies without any crashes.

Samsung 2016 K Series HDR TV
Havent heard anything from sixones since giving him the logs.

me neither :confused:

I have the same issues only with HDR content. Non HDR works perfectly on the new player. Ive had to revert back to the old player to play HDR.

Ive sent my logs in too so hopefully it can be fixed soon as i like the layout of the new player

do you have UHD content that is not HDR?

yes i have some 4k content that is non hdr

I am having the exact same issue on both my shield tubes…with the newest beta. My Shield 2019 Pro isnt having this issue. I start watching 4K hdr and it stutters a lot, then the ui completely stops working but the video will play, stuttering and skipping along. But it completely freezes up my shield. The video continues stumbling along but I cant stop it.

But it must be the Shield Plex App, because Plex for Kodi works.

Plex Client doesnt play any 4k HDR - crashes, stutter, crashes - useless at the moment.

@sixones
any update? Can you tell us whats the problem?
please reply!

best regards

I contacted him also in private a couple of days ago but didn’t get a reply. this needs to be addressed asap, 7.24 is not usable on the Tube. the fault probably lies in less available memory and the client app settings will have to be tweaked. I just hope it’s not a complete deal breaker, but it would be great to get a reply while I can still return the device and buy the Pro version.

I experienced the same thing. I acquired the ShieldTV Tube on Day 1 and promptly returned it once I discovered it is 32bit only as well. The 2019 ShieldTV Pro does not crash playing 4K HDR10 content.

wait what do you mean it’s 32 bit only? the architecture of the tegra chip should be the same, and if anything, 32 bit will consume less memory than 64bit.

@Achilles
yes maybe its 32bit but it can run all. See Plex for Kodi. It runs everything.

I guess the problem has to be adressed by Plex and solved.

could you please adress the problem Achilles

It doesn’t support 64-bit apps like Dolphin emulator. Thats a requirement for me so I promptly returned it.
